Joseph Wiseman--a damn fine actor

Guess I'll go home tonight, watch my copies of Detective Story (1951) and The Unforgiven (1960), and have a beer to the memory of Joseph Wiseman who died Oct. 19 at 91. News outlets say he's best remembered as the title villian in Dr. No, the first James Bond film--which is a shame because he had much better roles in other films. Check out his hopped up thief in Detective Story, his first film with him in the role he performed on stage in the play of the same name. His daughter said he wanted to be remember for his stage career. But he also was good as the Mafia godfather in Mann's very good Crime Story TV series.

RIP, Joe; they just don't have actors of your caliber any more.

I remember him more from television than from Dr. No...

Rest in Peace...

Bright light. Bright light. Uh oh.
Here's Wiseman (as Uncle Benjy) in The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, one of my fave films not available on DVD. [The second half of this clip was spoofed the next year by Woody Allen in Love and Death].
