The Odyssey (Christopher Nolan)

Oh, and he better shoot this in 70mm IMAX. I don't think that was mentioned in the studio statement. The 70mm IMAX presentations are always pretty awesome (even when the movie is not).

This is really disappointing. I was looking forward to Nolan's next film, but I genuinely have no interest in Nolan doing a remake of "The Odyssey". I want original stories!
My first reaction was to be a little bummed out. Nolan is at his best imo with original story. Then I started thinking maybe this will be Nolan's Gladiator. Maybe he found an ancient story he can twist into a classic like Ridley did. At the bare minimum we know it will be visually stunning. As always...Nolan will have my butt in the seat the first day in theaters.

101 Favorite Movies (2019)

If you're just joining us, here's a summary of everything we know so far about this movie:

After months of speculation about Christopher Nolan’s follow-up to his critical and box office hit “Oppenheimer,” which won him the Best Director Oscar, Universal Pictures unveiled before the holidays on X that he will be bringing Homer’s “The Odyssey” to the big screen.

“The Odyssey” is a classic piece of literature by Homer that is divided between 24 different books, preceded by “The Iliad.” It tells the 10-year journey story of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, as he travels home after the Trojan War. Along the way, he encounters multiple perils and discovers the death of his crewmates. Telemachus (Odysseus’ son), Penelope (Odysseus’ wife), Athena, Circe, Poseidon and Zeus are all major characters.

Historians and scholars date “The Odyssey” to sometime between 750-650 BC. The first printed Greek version became available in 1488. In the centuries since, it has remained one of the most studied, adapted and parodied stories ever with adaptations including the 1911 silent film by Giuseppe de Liguoro, 1954’s “Ulysses” with Kirk Douglas and the 2000 Coen brothers comedy “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”

With a new adaptation on the horizon, here is everything we know so far about Nolan’s take on “The Odyssey.”

Who is cast in the film and have they worked with Nolan before?

Like the all-star cast that was assembled for “Oppenheimer,” “The Odyssey” is already filled with major talent in Hollywood — confirmed names include Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron.

Damon most recently appeared in “Oppenheimer” as Lt. General Leslie Groves after his under-the-radar appearance in “Interstellar.” Pattinson appeared in “Tenet” as Neil, alongside John David Washington and Elizabeth Debicki. Going back a little farther, Hathaway had a supporting role as an astronaut in “Interstellar” and Catwoman in “The Dark Knight Rises,” marking just over 10 years since her last time working with Nolan.

For Holland, Zendaya, Nyong’o and Theron, “The Odyssey” marks their first time collaborating with Nolan. Holland and Zendaya, who are a real-life couple, will reunite on screen after the Marvel “Spider-Man” films.

How will the film be shot?

According to the social media post from Universal Pictures, “The Odyssey” will be “shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology.” Nolan’s craft has become synonymous with IMAX as “Oppenheimer,” “Dunkirk,” “Tenet” and “Interstellar,” which was recently re-released in theaters for its 10th anniversary, were all shot with IMAX cameras.

Who else is creatively involved?

Nolan is also writing and producing the film, reuniting with his longtime producing and life partner Emma Thomas, who won the Best Picture Oscar for “Oppenheimer” alongside Nolan.

How faithful will this adaptation be to ‘The Odyssey’?

It remains unclear how closely Nolan intends to follow Homer’s famous story, although the social media post from Universal Pictures teases “a mythic action epic shot across the world.”

When is the film set to release?

The film is set to release worldwide on July 17, 2026 in theaters after a 2025 production start date. Nolan previously released “Oppenheimer,” “Dunkirk,” “Inception” and “The Dark Knight” in the same month.

What a shame, Butler would have been better!

I'll bet the locations alone will be worth the price of admission

Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of “The Odyssey” will be partly filmed in Sicily which, according to scholars, was a location for Odysseus’ wanderings in the epic composed by Homer around 8th century BCE.

Shooting of the Sicilian portion of Nolan’s “Odyssey” is expected to start in roughly two months on the island of Favignana, known as “goat island,” which is believed to be the place where Homer envisioned Odysseus landed with his motley crew to barbecue goats and stock up on food. The idyllic isle is part of the Egadi archipelago off of Sicily’s north-west coast.

Nolan – who is shooting “The Odyssey” using brand new Imax film technology – is also likely to film some of the big-budget epic in Sicily’s Eolian islands, according to several sources. But the bulk of the mythical action movie’s Sicily shoot will be in Favignana. The film’s other announced locations are the U.K. and Morocco.

Italy’s Wildside, a Fremantle company, is servicing the Sicily shoot of “The Odyssey,” which Nolan is producing with Emma Thomas under their Syncopy banner for Universal Pictures. The Italian line-producer on “Odyssey” is Erik Paoletti. Wildside also recently handled physical production of Edward Berger’s “Conclave” in Rome.

There was no comment from Wildside on Monday. Universal did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Confirmed cast for “The Odyssey” which, of course, is among seminal texts of Western literature, comprises Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron, though it has not been revealed who will play what role.

“The Odyssey” recounts the 10-year journey of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, as he travels home after the Trojan War. Along the way, he encounters multiple perils and discovers the death of his crewmates. Telemachus (Odysseus’ son), Penelope (Odysseus’ wife), Athena, Circe, Poseidon and Zeus are all major characters.

Looks like Benny Safdie, memorable as Edward Teller in Oppenheimer, has also joined the cast.

The latest additions to the cast are Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, Samantha Morton and Bill Irwin.

While I don't particularly get excited about Nolan movies, the cast alone in this one makes it, uhm, moderately interesting.

Might save time to list the people who aren't in the movie at this point.
I'll get the Hollywood directory...

Ohhhhhh this one is totally out of left field

Boldly going.
I don't know how I feel about Matt Damon playing Odysseus. I have difficulty picturing it.

Regardless, I'm looking forward to it. The Odyssey is one of my favourite books. The TV mini-series (1997) was very good but had some flaws.

This could be epic.

At least they didn't sell out and get Russell Crowe. The last time Russel Crowe was original was when he tiptoed down a staircase like a ballet dancer in Thor 4.

What if he doesn't get cast as Odysseus?

True. Chris Nolan is one of those directors like Paul Thomas Anderson or Wes Anderson, who by all accounts, is a joy to work with and has actors and their agents lined up waiting to just be a part of their projects. I'm sure that many spoiled A-list actors, who have never likely held or have had to do a real job in their entire lives, will readily part with a good chunk of their usual fees and asking price just to work with directors like Chris Nolan, PTA, and Wes Anderson. I think that's why with those three directors you see massive talent and renown and deep casts.
