What are your Top 5 most overrated movies?

Eh?

Is this the end of free speech?

The Dark Knight is rated in the top 10 of the most well known movie internet site on the planet. That is laughable. I enjoyed it. But it's the most overrated film of all time. Nolan fanboys are to blame no doubt.
how can a good movie be overrated, ofc everyone is gonna rate it high because its great

for me most overrated movies:

The Godfather
The Godfather: Part II
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

You answer your own question. It's because too many people think a good movie is great.

Shawsank is a great example of a good movie that is overrated. Many people think it's the best ever. But it's not. It's just a fairly good movie.

There's plenty of free speech to go around here concerning what and who are overrated.
Unfortunately, it doesn't look like you can link people to searches you carry out yourself anymore. I know this because I tried pulling the same thing in the "what's your unpopular opinion" thread the other day.

Anyway, looks like this thread is shaping up to be more of the same old song and dance but with the added novelty of specifying exactly five films, so that's great.

So all who don't share your taste are illogical, and in apparent need of boats?

END of story? Why, sounds like the beginning of one to me.
well everyone is free to his opinion, but ur opinion is way past the logical limit by saying dark knight is a bad and overrated film...i can t even understand that you or anyone can say fhat
But I didn't. I was only taking the piss out of your crying logic at people's taste. TDK is one of my favourites. You can hardly spout about logic if you're imagining things said.

the most overrated in those is deer hunter the others are classics
What!!!

Calling movies overrated is such an empty and useless thing in my opinion. It's fine to state proper criticism towards a popular film, but just calling it overrated, which basically means "I'm not in the majority so I will hate on this movie", is just stupid to me.

I've seen plenty of popular movies I don't like, but usually I will say that I can see the appeal in a given film even if I don't agree with it. But I mean, you often see people calling a film overrated for basically being too shallow or overrated for being too dense. But anyways yeah, as others have pointed out, if there is an extremely popular movie that appeals to a lot of people it might get praise that seems way out of proportions, but that's how it is. Critizing it for it is just so basic...

At least this thread involves the challenge of thinking of a top five, but how do you even rank films in terms of being overrated?

I went to the IMDB Top 250 and picked out the 5 that I felt were really out of place. The 5 were in no real order for me.

Ultimately this thread is useless. Nobody's going to get any information that will change their lives. But that's probably true for a lot of threads.

Yeah, there was this thread last year which was all about how Fury Road was the most overrated film of 2015 and, when I instead suggested that The Revenant was the true most overrated film of 2015, it just resulted in several pages of arguing that I don't think made any difference to the people I argued with (as for me, well, I'm not even sure what really is the answer because, well, who cares anymore, we got bigger problems now).

Still amused that one of those users was trying to tell me that The Revenant was more like to be the most underrated movie of 2015. Like...no way.

Indeed. I'm also quite surprised I had to explain why a movie can be good and at the same time overrated.

yeah, sorry about that. There is no enough contain to be 3 hours long. Simply some scenes are too long and slightly boring. I love the book thou The Godfather is another mob movie that compares to Goodfellas or Casino. So yes, 9,2/10 is for me exaggerated. Of course it doesnt mean i dislike it.

Well as far as overrated goes, I think that the The Dark Knight, the Godfather and The Shawshank Redemption are all really great movies. It's just on the Imdb top 250, they are all voted in the top 4 of all time, along with Godfather Part II. I still haven't seen Part II, so I won't comment on that.

But as for the other three, I think they are all great movies, but overrated in the sense, that they are not 3 of the four greatest movies ever made. I would put them in the top 50 maybe, but not the top 5 ever made.

If I had to choose which movie is more overrated, I would say The Revenant. The Revenant certainly has bigger, more epic aspirations, than Fury Road. The Revenant is a good drama for sure, but didn't think it was a really great masterpiece, that is was made out to be.

Fury Road, is not a masterpiece either, but I think it does a better job at succeeding as an action extravaganza, than The Revenant does, as a drama masterpiece.

And to say The Godfather was too long, I actually thought maybe it needed to be longer perhaps, as Michael's relationship with Appelonia felt so quick and needed to be fleshed out more I thought.

So I get where you're coming from about overrated and yes it's true, certain films have that unanimous approval often seen to question askers as mob mentality.
When there's a goldmine of talent, like in The Godfather, it's easy to see why ppl hold such a film in high regard. I do not think The Godfather was as highly regarded at the time as the classic it is now for obvious reasons (being a well spring of emerging super star actors).

Something like Blade Runner took years and years and years for common film goers to appreciate, including some top critics. Personally I think you have to be a bit on the thick side to not recognize BR as pure brilliance right out of the gate, but that's just my opinion. I wouldn't call Blade Runner overrated. It does just fine on its own without any kind of title like that.

But back to the whole overrated thing. I get it. Critical thinking and having your own thoughts that are untouched by the mass consensus is important for your own well being (sort of lol). Sure, it'll get you ostracized socially a bit, but who cares? Usually the ousters, for lack of a better word, have their noses so far up their own bums that an opinion from that camp is less than even remotely significant.

You can't win an argument just by being right!
I'm not much of a Blade Runner fan, but I never thought of it as overrated.
I liked it but same for me. It can't be overrated IMO when so many people LOVED it into cult status.
