I thought this was kind of an odd choice, though @Slappydavis read the screenplay and insisted it was quite good/deserving. Tagging him here in case he cares to elaborate a bit, or post some of the interviews with Peele that he referenced as persuading him as to the writing's depth and all that.

It felt very much like a mood-based film, so maybe my reaction is based on ascribing that more to the directing than the writing, even though that line gets pretty blurry when someone's doing both.

Here's the (initial) screenplay: https://scriptslug.com/assets/upload...t-out-2017.pdf

You'll note that a lot of significant changes occurred between this draft and the film. Particularly the ending (which was still filmed and is probably on the physical release).

The first interview that I heard (and the one that got me to see the film) was while driving: https://www.npr.org/templates/transc...ryId=520130162

I saw a couple more on youtube, but there's apparently hundreds of them and they all are similarly staged, I'll try to find one in particular when I can.

Was compelled to read the screenplay after seeing Peele talk about fan theories here:

Couple things to note:
I'm not sure when exactly the screenplay was written, but I recall in interviews that Peele said he wrote it before he met his wife (countering claims he based it on his experience with her family) so it's at least pre-2013. The reason I bring this up is I've heard assertions it was written to "cash in" on BLM. Which is false.

Oh. Okay. I just popped out a filling while flossing and thinking about the film. I...better go.

i saw this movie like six months ago and as good as I thought it was (
), I never imagined it would be receiving any Oscar nominations. But if it was going to win an Oscar, this is the one it deserved.

Thanks for that. I alluded to this in the chat the other day, but I am a little wary of this kind of thing, only because it seems like any time I hear someone talk about their film or screenplay, I end up being more impressed by it. I think at this level any moderately good movie tends to have a lot of talent, art, and thought behind it, almost without exception, and it's very hard not to be won over by the effort and enthusiasm that most creators have for their work, particularly if they feel more passionate about it than most (as Peele obviously would here, compared to someone who's been doing this for decades and already taken on most of their passion projects).

I'll definitely take a closer look, though.

Hey I chipped a tooth manning the SpyParty booth and I kept going, so you should be able to keep arguing about screenplays after losing some lousy filling.
