2013 Movie Watching Goals

Tools

As the new year commences, what are the movies you hope to get around to watching?

Here's mine:

My Friend Ivan Lapshin
Satantango
A Borrowed Life
Nostalgia For Countryland
In The Heat Of The Sun

And some classics:

Anatomy Of A Murder
Letter From An Unknown Woman
Paper Moon
Marty
Ace In The Hole
Fanny and Alexander
Berlin Alexanderplatz
Edvard Munch

Stuff I haven't seen by Gillian Armstrong, Raoul Ruiz, Ann Hui (as I find it).

Stuff I've bought on dvd over the last year - Juzo Itami films, The Baby of Macon, Morgan...

More Indian films.

More silent films.

Random movies that have been on my to-see list for a while, such as: Exotica, Long Arm of the Law, Sir Arne's Treasure, Following.

I'd like to re-watch Orson Welles's Shakespeare films.

Some directors that I'm interested in exploring are Cassavetes, Bresson, Truffaut, and Tarkovsky. Other than that, Amarcord, Badlands, and The Leopard are three movies that I desperately want to see.

I've been working on my top 100 film list, and while putting it together, I realized that I have some significant gaps in my movie-watching resume. I've seen a ton of films by Hitchcock, Kurosawa, Wilder, Kubrick, the Coen Brothers, Wong Kar-Wai, Fellini, Chaplin, Keaton, Murnau, and Allen, all directors that I really admire. Conversely, I've only seen one film by Bergman (The Seventh Seal), and none by Tarkovsky, Godard, Ray, and none of Scorsese's pre-Goodfellas work. These are all directors that are generally seen as great filmmakers, and I want to see for myself what they have to offer.

With all of that in mind, and with everyone throwing New Year's resolutions out there, I'm going to make it a goal of mine in 2013 to familiarize myself with the works of Bergman, Tarkovsky, Godard, Ray, and early Scorsese. I wanted to ask the forum, as a relative newbie, what are your movie-watching goals in 2013? Do you have gaps in your film-watching that you want to rectify? Also, if anyone has suggestions for films by the directors I mentioned to start with, that'd be great!

For anyone who fancies a quick look through, here is my 576 (and constantly growing) watchlist of films that I want to see eventually on IMDB, there might be a few that I've forgot to tick off but otherwise it mainly consists of great films compiled from various lists and reviews I've seen over the internet.

http://www.imdb.com/user/ur31266888/watchlist

Mainly this year I want to watch some great directors who I have yet to even see a single film such as Tarkovskiy, Fellini, Godard, Kurosawa etc. Right now I'm currently having a film spree of the best 2012 films, hopefully in 2013 I'll keep more up to date with the current releases as well so I don't have to have a massive catch up once the year is over.

Aw crap, I just posted a new thread in the general movie discussion that asks pretty much this same question. I can delete it and re-post here what I wrote over there, if that works better. I'm still learning! Essentially, I haven't seen much, or anything, by Bergman, Tarkovsky, Godard, Ray, or early Scorsese, and I want to dive into their films.

I was just about to post in the other thread that a moderator will probably end up merging it seeing as they're very similar :P

In response your post, as you can see my goals are quite similar in terms of getting round to watching the work of great directors who I haven't done so yet. Before a few days ago I had never seen a Bergman film myself but I've now seen Persona and I have a few more ready to watch as well so I'm looking forward to that.

When you say Scorsese pre-Goodfellas do you mean to say you haven't seen Taxi Driver and Raging Bull? If so you should be in for a treat, two masterpieces in my opinion. I actually want to see a few more of Scorsese's films myself, whilst I've seen most of his well known films (three aforementioned, The Departed, Hugo and Mean Streets) I want to watch the likes of Casino, Cape Fear, Last Temptation of Christ, King of Comedy, Gangs of New York, The Aviator etc. The same goes with Alfred Hitchcock who I've seen almost all his popular titles (except Notorious) but I want to explore his older and less well received work.

Also didn't say in my other post that along with getting through my watchlist that contains a lot of film's from lists like AFI 100 movies and S&S, I'll also be trying to work my way through the list section here on the forum. When I notice a film from a list showing on TV I normally try and record it to watch anyway, but yeh I'll keep doing that in 2013

Some of the couple of hundred films I own but have not yet watched. So, basically, the same as most years.

Watch some Australian Films, it may enlighten you! I doubt it though

For pre-Goodfellas Scorsese, I'm sure I'm not covering any new ground when I say you should definitely check out Taxi Driver and Raging Bull for a start; I love the former and am a little indifferent to the latter but they may hit you differently. The only others I can recommend by the directors you mentioned are Breathless by Godard and Persona by Bergman, since I've got very large gaps myself in terms of their work.

As for my goals, I'm planning a pretty big year which will hopefully come to fruition. I want to explore the noir and horror genres in greater depth, see more documentaries and more early foreign films, British films and silent movies.

I'm pretty new to the movie scene *no pun* myself, so I have a lot of ground to cover. I've seen most of Scorsese's work, though, so you should definitely check out Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, along with Casino, Mean Streets, and Cape Fear if you haven't seen those (havent seen Cape myself, but heard great things).

I look to check out Woody Allen and Hitchcock this year, as I haven't seen a single film from either of them. Also want to look into more Stanley Kubrick because all I've seen is 2001, which was disappointing to me, and Dr. Strangelove which was pretty good.

More Indian films.
Definitely. I am completely ignorant of Indian cinema. Recently I saw The Golden Thread (1965), which made me want to explore more classic Indian cinema. I'm dying to watch Mrinal Sen's In Search of Famine and And Quiet Rolls The Dawn.

Lots of genres and sub-sections of film I want to explore:

Silent film
British film
Film Noir
Horror

and these directors:
Godard, Tarkovsky, Fellini, Eisenstein, Resnais, Malle, Kurosawa, Bergman (etc)

Story about my mother: The Castrating Zionist
Amour - It's coming to the "arthouse" theater in my town. Won the Palme d'Or at Cannes, beating Holy Motors. I have to see why they thought that, Holy Motors was amazing.

The Killer - John Woo

Lo
and these directors:
Godard, Tarkovsky, Fellini, Eisenstein, Resnais, Malle, Kurosawa, Bergman (etc)

That's an amazing list. Personally, I would add Agnes Varda to that list. Too many female directors get ignored when it comes to the Avant-Garde, both on the Godard side and the Brakhage side.

If you haven't seen Hiroshima, Mon Amour watch that one first. There are very few movies, I think, that can reach the depth of emotion that it does.

Last year I moved to an area with a large Indian population. Multiplexes are always playing new Bollywood stuff alongside the American blockbusters. There's an all-Indian video store (in fact the only remaining video store in the area) on my drive to work. I keep meaning to take advantage of all this good stuff but the over-saturation is a problem. I don't know where to start. I'll try to dive in before school starts up again though.

I plan on watching my torrent collection (downloaded for completely valid reasons) and buying my dvds from now on: with the exception of out of region dvds, which frequently do not have English subs.

Trying watch more of the French New Wave that isn't Godard:

Paris nous appartient
The Soft Skin
Les godelureaux

Some of the early silent films

The Birth of a Nation
Sunrise
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

Watch the rest of the Pearls of the Czech New Wave by Criterion Collection (already seen Daisies and Pearls of the Deep)

Dig deeper into Iranian films. I suppose they call that the Iranian New Wave? Perhaps that was earlier, I don't know, that's why I'm looking into it. Have seen: The Hunter and another one I can't recall the title it was about two girls in Iran who have a thing for each other, but one marries the other's brother and the brother turns her into the subjugated wife. It was very good, too bad I can't remember the name. Oh well, starting with Rafi Pitts, I suppose.
