Of the ones I've seen, these are the performances that stand out. Al Pacino's hilarious in Glengarry Glen Ross when he's destroying Kevin Spacey's character – reminds me a bit of what he does in Heat but less over-the-top.

9: Michael Shannon:

as Curtis LaForche in Take Shelter
as Richard Kuklinski in The Iceman

I'd put General Zod third but I haven't seen Man of Steel in full.

Haven't and wont ever see The Iceman. I'm sure Shannon is very good but i just hate how much of a lie that whole film is.

Shotgun Stories is my favourite Shannon performance.

10: Michael Fassbender:

as David in Prometheus
as Magneto in X-Men: First Class
as Charles Allen in Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Silk Stocking

Haven't and wont ever see The Iceman. I'm sure Shannon is very good but i just hate how much of a lie that whole film is.

Shotgun Stories is my favourite Shannon performance.
I seem to see bits and pieces, for instance I saw him looming over Kristen Stewart in The Runaways a few months ago. As with Fassbender he's someone that I just instantly liked and he is brilliant in The Iceman, so it's worth a look if only for his performance.
