I Very Vaguely remember a movie where there is some sort of bad guy who breaks into a house, we think he is going to do something nasty, he goes into a basement, and BAMM, switcheroo, Stairs retract into the wall, and he is trapped, and has to go through all sorts of secrets and tricks and traps and mind bending stuff to try and escape alive. Does anyone know what this was?
Bad guy breaks into a house and is caught in an elaborate trap ?

Certainly not as old as the Collector, and not the people under the stairs, and certainly not as pedestrian as Home Alone. This was no comedy. To escape there were puzzles to solve, like opening which door at what time, sort of like a jigsaw trap, but not as deadly. I remember a seemingly empty basement with a few doors off the main room, and like a chair and table in the room, and I think a 2 way mirror. The bad guy went down the stairs into the basement and the stairs retracted into the wall, and he couldn't jump high enough to get to the door. So it was drag the chair over to the door, but still couldn't reach, drag the table over, nope bolted to the floor, check the doors, all locked. Hmmm, and it went on from there.
The detail of just not being able to reach the door and some of the furniture being bolted down is annoyingly familiar.
Just to state what I'm assuming:
English? (And if so, can you say with any confidence what country?)
Color?
Feature length?
Classified either as horror or thriller?
Can you remember anything about what the main character looked like or what the antagonist looked like? Do you remember how the movie ends?
You said it's not as old as The Collector. Do you remember about what year you watched it?

It was in English, and Color, I'm guessing from America, and that's about all I remember. I think also there was a room that was off the main room where he was trapped which looked into a fake bedroom also. I think he ended up getting into the bedroom which held more puzzles or things to figure out to escape. I don't remember if he did escape or not.
If no one remembers it, I might have the basis for a Script, lol.

(What I'm saying is maybe watching Intruders would be a good substitute for you!)
There are also some echoes with the film The Collection (the sequel to The Collector).

I see where the trick is here. When you say the Collector, I am thinking 1965 Terrence Stamp. I guess you mean the 2009 version, which I didn't know about but I will have a look at that one.

He breaks into a house where he's been doing construction work. There's an extended sequence in the basement, as well as an extended sequence in a bedroom that has been booby-trapped.

I've never heard of the Terence Stamp movie with the same name. I included a link to the movie I was suggesting in my original post.
Instead, what a journey we've taken!

Watched the Collector, and the Collection last night. Pretty good movie, but that's not it. I can see the room in my head, I'll try to describe. The bad guy enters the basement, it's well lit, he comes down the stairs, the room has a very high ceiling, the stairs are against the left wall, but no wall on the right. there is one chair and a table in the centre of the room. there is 3 doors, 2 or the same side as the stairs, 1 at the back. The guy, walks down the stairs, tries the first door to his right, locked. Tries the second door, locked. Walks to the back of the room, tries the 3rd door. The door to the basement slams shut, and he swings around to se the stairs slide back into the wall under the door. He hurries back to where the stairs were and tries to jump to the door, but there is nothing to grab onto and he cant reach the door anyway. He goes to grab the desk and drag it over, but it is firmly in place, as is the chair. From here the escape room type of game begins. I sort of remember that bit, and the part about the mocked up bedroom, but that's about it.
