Since Yoda closed the latest thread pertaining to comedy films, I decided to go ahead & reply to one the links he provided....
10. Some Like It Hot
Being a movie from the late 50's, with it's screwball comedy centering on the now-over-used theme of cross dressing men, I had expected that Some Like It Hot would've gone cold by now.
And yet, in large part due to Billy Wilder's sharp-edged yet still slapstick script, it hasn't all that much.
And adding fuel to fire, as always, is Marilyn Monroe. Even through modern eyes, the way she seems to always melt perfectly into her dress throughout the entire film is still an important contribution to the movie's enduring high heat factor.
9. Animal House
Personally, I've included this on this this list more as a sentimental favorite than for it's comedy.
Check the "on button" to your brain at the door when entering the Animal House, pick up a handful of mashed potato, mixed greens or whatever your favorite choice of sloppy luncheon side order may be,
& then, prepare for battle.
8. AnchorMan
A man being killed by the senseless and violent act of impalement with a trident is not funny.
Unless it's a rumble caught on T.V. & stars the Anchorman.
Then, just like the rest of this movie, it's frikkin' hilarious.
7. Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
A cross country journey of discovery across America that includes a huge naked fatman running in public, anti-semitism, racism, Pamela Anderson & a chicken in a traveling bag.
And it's all for a good cause
.... not.
6. Knocked Up
Judd Apatow scored big with 40 Year Old Virgin, a comedy that explores the ups & downs of trying to get laid. He follows up with what is in my opinion, his 2nd. best film, Knocked Up, a film that explores the ups & downs that can come
after getting laid.
5. Me, Myself & Irene
I just can't help myself. When it comes to romantic comedies,
I'm just a sucker for love triangles.
4. Airplane
Before Epic Movie, Scary Movie, Superhero Movie or Dance Movie, there was
this movie. The original gangsta of the "modern" take off movie.
Or to put it another way,
this is a movie about another movie but done as a spoof movie. And since I've used it nine times, here's the word "movie" just one more time, to make it an even ten.
A timeless classic.
3. Duck Soup
An even more timeless classic.
A comedy from the early 1930's, with the Bros. Marx carrying on with their timeless mayhem antics & spouting out lines like "I could dance with you till the cows come home. On second thought, I'd rather dance with the cows till you came home."
For any of you who haven't yet seen this, IMO, the best of the Marx movies, but have decided to give it a view for the first time, I envy you. It will truly be a gala day for you. And if you're anything like Groucho, the Marx's head hermano, a gal a day is enough for you. You probably couldn't handle any more.
2. 40 Year Old Virgin
By far, my fave of the Apatow comedies. Like Knocked Up, his best films seem to be the ones in which he does triple duty as director, writer, & producer.
In this case, this triple-combo results in a movie whose strength lies not just with the high level of comedy (which probably would've been enough), but also for the fact that at it's heart, this is a story of a "late bloomer" that is handled not just intelligently, but even more importantly, with a genuine heart.
Ofttimes, many of the characters seem to deliver their punchlines with a tempered sense of sympathy towards the plight of the lead character, even when the results lead to a an exasperated situation of disintegrated success (a tried & true formula of the genre).
This movie can be touching & even socially in-depth at times, but without any cost the number of out-loud laughs.
1. Dumb & Dumber
For me, there is no other way that I can describe this movie other than just plain stupid, simple & funny.
Which is probably why it is not only my favorite comedy so far, but also one of my favorite movies of all time.
