Do you buy movies digitally?

Tools

If so, from where? And what were the last movies you bought digitally? I sometimes buy digital movies from the Apple tv app (formerly called iTunes). I bought Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga on sale today for 9.99. It includes a couple hours of behind the scenes footage and special features. In the past two months I have purchased digital copies of:

Kinds of Kindness
Hit Man
The Boyfriend
The Fall Guy
Back to the Beach
Pennies From Heaven
Xandau
It Happened at the World's Fair
Lullaby for Broadway
Tea for Two

Occasionally. Usually things fall into a clear bucket of "I want to own a real copy of this" or "I just want to see this so I'll rent it." It's rare for me to completely buy a digital copy. Usually when it happens it's an indie filmmaker I specifically want to support and/or something that isn't rentable yet and only costs a bit more to buy, and I don't mind paying a bit more to not wait, even if I might not want to watch it a second time.

But yeah, overall: rarely.

The digital stuff I have is from either digital codes I have received or from the Vudu disc to digital conversion.

Are these in the cloud or are they downloadable? If I buy a movie, I’d like to actually own it rather than the digital purveyor being able to take it from me.
I’ve bought a couple when my desire to watch the movie overwhelmed by parsimony. I also buy tv series that way, because I’m not concerned with owning them. I just don’t want to pay for another channel.

They are in the cloud, but can also be downloaded to a compatible device. I have some movies downloaded to my phone.

I buy my digital movies there, too.

However I usually only buy the movies that are on sale for $4.99. If you wait long enough, almost everything will go down to $4.99 at some point (but you better buy quickly because they often go back up to the regular price)

If I'm going to "buy" it, I want something physical that I hold in my hand. In regard disks, the desk I'm using right now has this big precarious pile of discs on a shelf. It makes me feel good to have it there. Having spent both recreational and professional life in the world of digital stuff, sometimes I like having something material, not just a huge stream of ones and zeros. Yeah, I know that discs are also just using the same ones and zeros but there's something about having that thing in my hand that that's different....I own a copy of The Blob, The Big Sleep, Gladiator, The Wizard of Oz, The Mothman Prophecies and Ben Hur, as well as many others.

I bought three and gave up.

OK but the thread topic is buying digital movies....

Same here. And if the movie I've rented or purchased digitally turns out to be a winner I'll try to get a physical copy anyway.

The other side of the topic is that lots of films aren't available online but I still desperately want to to watch them. And in that case I simply have to buy a physical copy without knowing if it's going to be good enough to be part of the precious collection.

Some have already mentioned the pleasure of physical ownership, but another problem I have with digital libraries is that I find it impossible to remember what I have, and this would be an even much more significant problem with music files.

Occasionally.

I recently bought Sleeping Dogs, The Bikeriders, and Horizon Part 1, because I missed them in theaters and it was only like $10 each to "buy" them digitally. Still haven't watched them yet though.

Yeah I would never pay $10 for a digital movie, it's a total ripoff. If you just wait they always go down to $5 after a while

In that case, you don't want to know how much I paid for Kinds of Kindness.

I do but only from Amazon Prime, that's the only thing I'm on where you can buy them, these are digital films I've bought:

The Flash
Jungle Cruise
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves
Marcel The Shell With Shoes On
Black Adam
Shang Chi: Legend of the Ten Rings

A few of the above were in the cinema at the same time or just after the cinema release, I don't get to the cinema as much now so it's nice not to wait for a film we want to see.

A lot now have gone up in price to about £19.99 for premium/new releases so haven't bought one for a while, rather pay that for an actual blu ray.

I still mostly buy and rent blu rays, and also watch films on Netflix and Amazon Prime.

It’s A Classic Rope-A-Dope
More and more. I don’t have a ton, but those $5 Apple deals are like a magnet. Sometimes I think about going totally digital but I regretted getting rid of all my DVDs and starting over. Don’t want to make the same mistake twice.

Having a physical copy of a movie or downloading the digital one is always, always a good idea, because occasionally a digital movie can get removed or - even worse - edited.

It happened with The French Connection; even the digital copy I had purchased years earlier was butchered for no apparent reason. Without a blu-ray copy of the movie, I would no longer be able to watch the uncensored version.

I don't know if Fox ever fixed that or not, certainly no one was clamoring for them to censor one of the all-time great action movies.

Also, don't even get me started on Disney's Song of the South, which has at times been legally available on physical formats but never, to the best of my knowledge, offered in any kind of digital form by the studio (and they probably never will).

The thread topic also is "Do you", to which an appropriate response could be no. Being of a verbose nature, however, "no" does not suffice for me. I need to cite my reasons.
