Expect to start hearing a lot of news about Francis Ford Coppola's new project, Megalopolis, as it is rumored that it might be making its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this year.

According to Variety, the movies being sought by Cannes include
Francis Ford Coppola‘s self-produced epic “Megalopolis” with Adam Driver and Forest Whitaker. That would mark a big return for Coppola, who debuted his 1979 masterpiece “Apocalypse Now” 45 years ago in Cannes (It’s where he famously declared: “We had access to too much money, too much equipment, and little by little we went insane…My film is not about Vietnam, it is Vietnam”). Quote-hungry journalists are salivating at the prospect of a Coppola press conference for “Megalopolis.”

A FF Coppola press conference would indeed make major headlines across the world.

What else do we know about the movie? The wikipedia entry states:

The film features an ensemble cast, including Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jason Schwartzman, Grace VanderWaal, Kathryn Hunter, Talia Shire, Dustin Hoffman, D. B. Sweeney, and Giancarlo Esposito. Filming began in November 2022 and concluded in March 2023.
The film is scheduled to be released in Fall 2024.

Yeah, I can't even remember the last time Dustin Hoffman actually appeared in a movie released to theaters (not counting voice roles, such as the one he has in Kung Fu Panda 4).

Wonder why Schwartzman got cast?

Wonder why Schwartzman got cast?
Are you calling him a nepo baby?!?

Coppola's latest may find it difficult to secure a theatrical release

Yeah this sounds bad.. really bad
From a financial sense, yes, unless Apple or another streamer stepped up.

From an artistic point of view, it sounds like a typical Coppola move - going full avant-garde

Premiering at Cannes

In case you haven't been following the news on this movie, it's a hard sell with not many distributors wanting to take a chance with it. It sounds like Le Pacte, which distributed Anatomy of a Fall, might be interested (link). Let's hope something comes of this instead of just clickbait.

If LePacte makes a deal, it will probably be just for French theatrical rights. They are not a global distributor AFAIK

Just when you thought he was out....

First look

Like the fella says, in Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock."

I’m pretty excited for this. I don’t know much about it but then again who does. It’s all about the fact that it’s a new Coppola film with an original vision and story.
