'Creep' (2014)

Me watching this movie:

Three jump scares within the first 12 minutes.
Another jump scare on 15 minutes
Another jump scare on 25 minutes
Another jump scare on 39 minutes
Another jump scare on 43 minutes
Another jump scare on 44 minutes
1 hour 14 minutes - holy **** that jump scare scared me.

1h 17 minutes - film ends.

Duplass is good and there is one very clever TV to camera transition trick. But the rest is meh.

Happy People: A Year in the Taiga - 2010

Bakhtia, Siberia, population around 300. Werner Herzog and Dmitry Vasyukov managed to do in an hour and half what The Last Alaskans couldn't do in one thousand four hundred and seventy six hours. They showed it all, the overall difficulties, there mindsets, there philosophies, there families and saudade, the portuguese word without translation that means missing your love ones. They also showed the more vulnerable and exploited. They showed us the economics, the inflation the fur hunters, the trappers have to endure, seeing the price of furs decreasing and the price of utilities increasing. Four seasons, different tasks, but always busy, doing the same thing there ancestors did. I don't know if they are happy people like the title says, but I'm sure they don't have the free time, like we do, to experience sadness. I don't have to talk about cinematography, is beautiful like expected.

Elle (Paul Verhoeven, 2016)

Nicely enough made and very well acted by Huppert but the tale struggles for credibility for me

Welcome to the human race...
Terminator: Dark Fate -

For the record, don't lump me in with the chumps who are going to hate this for all the wrong reasons.

The Void (Jeremy Gillespie & Steven Kostanski, 2016)
+
Not entirely devoid of merit but patchy and more effort in the writing wouldn't have gone amiss

Underworld (2003)

Rewatched this just to see Beckinsale in latex. I'd really want to like this film because of the setting / concept but it's way too generic YA storywise. Even action is kinda lame and vampires and werewolves aren't enough to salvage this. Didn't really hate it this though so maybe it's growing on me.

Day Of Wrath (1943, Carl Theodor Dreyer)

Didn't fully "get" this film when I first saw it a few years ago but this second time I was sitting there spellbound the whole time. The brooding atmosphere, the solemn austere beauty of composition, the masterfully understated direction and acting - it all just fell into place this time around.
Dreyer was a master - what else can I say?

I've only ever seen 1 Dreyer film and loved it, so need to get around to this. Thanks for reminding me.

I must say I don't think she's ever looked better. She also suits fangs.

I've just watched Vampyr and it left me a bit cold unfortunately.

Gangster Squad 2013

I thought Sean Penn gave a terrifically menacing performance as the mobster Mickey Coen and Ryan Gosling has a lot of charisma and Emma Stone is bloody gorgeous as usual but aside from that it was just alright and could have been better

Do you know what a roller pigeon is, Barney? They climb high and fast, then roll over and fall just as fast toward the earth. There are shallow rollers and deep rollers. You can’t breed two deep rollers, or their young will roll all the way down, hit, and die. Officer Starling is a deep roller, Barney. We should hope one of her parents was not.

Split (M. Night Shyamalan, 2016)

A nice enough lead performance and fairly enjoyable before it derails in the later stages

A Silent Voice (2016) - Rewatch on Blu-ray

Kind of annoying that I was watching it dubbed and I ended up having to turn the dubtitles (subtitles to match the dub for the hard of hearing) on to understand half of what the actors are saying because something is very wrong with the TV in this hotel room. Still, it's A Silent Voice.

'Martyrs' (2008)

Dir.: Pascal Laugier

Right from the start there is unrelenting violence. It's gruesome, grim, distressing and gory, and has a brutal plot and disturbing ending. It's film-making that pushes boundaries

It is though, very well made, edited and directed. While I can safely say I'll never watch it again, I am glad I've ticked it off the list.

I'm not a fan of New French Extreme but Martyrs is the best of that bunch I've seen. Based on the reviews I was expecting some crappy torture porn but it ended up being a proper movie. I also liked the ending which really fitted the general mood of the film. I guess I should rewatch it at some point so I could rate it properly.

Raven73's Avatar
Boldly going.
Stan & Ollie.
6.5/10.
They were trying to do a chapter in the life of these two men (the last chapter), but frankly I would have liked to have seen more. I would have liked to have seen their early careers and how they met and maybe even some of their childhoods. Then the movie could have been more well-rounded at 2 hours instead of a little over an hour and a half.
They did an excellent job re-creating some of Stan and Ollie's classic skits. Now I want to watch the originals.
