Gene Hackman and wife found dead

A gas leak would be the good news, however two other dogs survived. We need toxicology to come back and that will take a while but from the looks of it. He likely died of natural causes...she died of suicide...the one dog died because of lack of food or water.

The other two dogs....I don't know what they were eating.

But three adult children and an adult grandchild you should be doing daily checkins with 90 year olds. I understand not visiting when you live all around the country...but phone calls are cheap. If you aren't in assisted living then you should be calling your parents every day.

doesn't the pill bottles bring in a possible deliberate OD?
Of course it does, but I'm trying to factor in Gene's death, her death, and the dog's death... Whatever happened has to account for all three, with no visible, obvious foul play...

The dog might have simply not left her side. Some dogs are incredibly loyal.
Or she might not have realised it had no route outside.
These are both plausible explanations I think.

The article I read said that two of the dogs had access to get out of the house. The one that died was found in a kennel/crate.

His wife was only 63, so I'm just not buying the suicide angle yet. I could see it if they were both over 90 and had been married almost all their lives together.

I'm picturing a scenario like Hunter S Thompson where maybe Hackman's health was so bad that he just wanted it ended. And maybe his wife decided it's best she go with him since it's such a painful event, especially if she had to do it. The dog death is a bit weird though.

Also, I haven't seen Royal Tenenbaums mentioned yet (unless I missed it) and he's absolutely fantastic in that movie. So funny.

I also second the suggestions to watch The Conversation. Regardless of Hackman, it's just a damn good movie.

Spent the evening watching The Conversation, which I have seen several times. Easily one of his best performances, IMO.

Last article I read had more info from the daughter (the one who hasn't seen him in recent years, <sigh>), who stated that, despite his advanced age, her dad got along quite well physically and even exercised and did Pilates. For whatever that info is worth...

The Guy Who Sees Movies
I noticed they removed the day of his death from Wikipedia. They could have been dead for weeks.
Heard that too. I'm sure that they will do an autopsy on the bodies, but results on those take some days when there's not some sort of obvious trauma like a gunshot wound. News stories seem to be settling on them dying something 10 days ago. Unfortunately that might make definitive results harder to determine. Pills were scattered around the house, so toxicology would be in order.

One thing for sure. It appears it's unanimous. We all hope it was innocent; we all are curious and waiting for the outcome of the investigation, and we agree the world has lost a legend in the world of acting.

The most reasonable take I have heard on this is that Betsy had a stroke or something and Gene found her on the bathroom floor. He went to get help and in his haste fell. As for the dog, I heard it was stuck in a kennel. I'm sure it wasn't suicide. Suicides tend to put their affairs in order and a suicidal dog lover wouldn't leave their dog trapped.

>So now we're getting conflicting reports on his health

Dude was 95. There's no way he was "in good health." The question is whether he could get up and get around the house and do something like feed himself or get himself his pills.

If he couldn't, it makes sense that something happened to the wife and he was helpless to even take care of himself.

>Suicides tend to put their affairs in order and a suicidal dog lover wouldn't leave their dog trapped.

Yeah but the back door was left open so that indicates someone doing it for the dogs. It's just a weird case.

So his wife died from hantavirus around February 11th or so. Gene had advanced dementia and died from heart disease a week later on the 18th. I wonder if he even knew she was dead.
