My reaction to #8, #7, and #6...blah

It didn't make my list, but Blade Runner is great and could have made my list on another day or in another mood. Jaws was also not on my list; I can't say it means as much to me as it does to others here, but its impact on cinema by ushering in the blockbuster age--for good or for ill--is undeniable.

I like Jaws a lot. It's a film I've been seeing on TV since I was a kid. Still, I have to admit that when I got back to it in my late teens/early 20's, I wasn't *that* impressed. I mean, I liked it, but wasn't blown away. But as I've kept rewatching it, I've fell in love with it more and more. I liked @mark f's post a few pages back because it highlights how well this film is shot and framed, but on top of that, you have three great performances in Scheider, Dreyfuss, and Shaw that carry it all the way through. It didn't make my list, but like I said, I like it a lot... and it's not my favorite Spielberg, but it's certainly Top 5.

It's been a while since I updated this...

My Summary:

Seen: 86/95
My list: 15/25

My List

The Adventure Starts Here!
You know how they say "show, don't tell?" I don't know if that's entirely true. I say that because my favorite scene in a movie may be Quint's speech about the U.S.S. Indianapolis, which is all telling, and besides his face, not much showing.
I think, in this case, less is more. Hearing him tell it, instead of them doing some sort of gawdawful flashback, is far far better here. Sometimes it's better to let the viewer/hearer *imagine* the scene being described. Heck, that's why books are so popular.

My Top 10 guesses...
  1. The Godfather
  2. 2001: A Space Odyssey
  3. Goodfellas
  4. Raiders of the Lost Ark
  5. Pulp Fiction
  6. Jaws
  7. Casablanca
  8. Citizen Kane
  9. Apocalypse Now
  10. Blade Runner

I attempted to guess ranking as much as I could, but who knows.
So far, my batting average is not that good, but I'm gonna stand by it and say that Pulp Fiction will be #5. My second choice is Casablanca, and I might mess up the ranking, but I'm sure they'll both be #5 and #4.

But you surely have to know Departed and Dark Knight aren't making this?

But you surely have to know Departed and Dark Knight aren't making this?
Nope no need to because there just predictions from the movies that I've seen

I feel like I’m repeating myself here - or that my name is secretly Chris Stuckmann - but I grew up with Jaws and saw it at a very early age...

I guess that’s also just how most cinephiles are shaped. You find your love for film - in some shape or form - very early on and can’t seem to ever let go of that amazing little thing called cinema.

Jaws is one of Spielberg’s best even though it’s also one of his earliest. This was also back when Spielberg was a younger and more daring director, clearly showing his trademark style but not being afraid of taking some risks.

Being dubbed “one of the first true blockbusters” it’s swimming a fine fishing line between being a fun adventure flick and a frightening thriller with some horror elements. It’s scary good fun!

The setup is so simple yet the story never stalls or becomes stale and it never screws around or runs aground. The only thing running is the legs on the terrified people sprinting out the water (and probably also a few cinemagoers back in the day...)

I love how the story slowly evolves and that we get plenty of time with the characters or at least enough to feel like they are fleshed out enough. If not, some of them will be even more fleshed out later on...... if you catch my drift. But honestly, I miss those days where movies would take their time and where characters felt human and environments felt lived in.

Not much more to say than Jaws is a classic and a scary great time. Amazing score, of course, by John Williams whose relationship with Spielberg I definitely ship. Despite how straight forward this film can feel like at first glance, there’s so much to it under the surface.... and more than “just” a giant killer shark too. Great film. Seen it more times than I can count.

We've gone on holiday by mistake
1. The Godfather
2. Goodfellas
3. Pulp Fiction
4. The Departed
5. The Dark Knight
