The best black and white movies...in the modern age

Tools

Not sure if this has been done before, apologies if it has. But what are the best black and white movies ever made in the true era of modern cinema?

By modern cinema, I mean say from 1985 onwards....Ones that spring to my mind are:

'Schindler's List'

'Nebraska'

'The man who wasn't there'

Any more?

Dead Man

The first movie that popped into my head when I saw the title of this thread was The Man Who Wasn't There....absolutely exquisite black and white photography, though I totally agree regarding The Artist. i think Manhattan deserves mention here as well.

This might just do nobody any good.
Frances Ha.

From 1986: Down by Law.

From 1987: Wings of Desire (which I may prefer to Paris, Texas)

La Haine is also good.

Pi is a fascinating first foray for a now fan-favorite filmmaker. A Field in England is arguably Ben Wheatley’s most... Ben Wheatley work yet. Good Night, and Good Luck is an underrated gem.

Ed Wood, the peak of Burton’s career.

Big second to Ed Wood as well.

Clerks, Frances Ha, Pi, The White Ribbon, Down By Law, Stranger than Paradise (1984).
Quite a few more I can think of but of the top of my head they are my favourites, that I can remember anyway.

Anyone seen Control? The Ian Curtis bio-pic. I haven’t but I’ve heard it’s quite good.

Clerks (1994), The Addiction (1995), Pi (1998), The General (1998), Good Night and Good Luck (2005), and Sin City (2005) (Which was probably filmed in color and done B&W in post).

The Turin Horse.

It makes potato eating a soul crushing experience.

Embrace of the Serpent is a great hallucinogenic Herzog-ian epic.

Some great post-1980 B&W films I've seen:

Nebraska (2013)
Escape from Tomorrow (2013)
Frankenweenie (2012)
Frances Ha (2012)
The Artist (2011)
Good Night, and Good Luck. (2005)
Coffee and Cigarettes (2003)
The Man Who Wasn't There (2001)
Celebrity (1998)
Pi (1998)
Dead Man (1995)
Ed Wood (1994)
Clerks (1994)
Schindler's List (1993)
Shadows and Fog (1991)
Stranger Than Paradise (1984)
Broadway Danny Rose (1984)
Zelig (1983)
Raging Bull (1980)
The Elephant Man (1980)
Stardust Memories (1980)

Three films I haven't seen yet, but can remember on the top of my hat:

The Party (2017)
The Good German (2006)
Down By Law (1986)

The ones I'm thinking of are Pi (1998) and La Haine (1995).
