This might just do nobody any good.
I've been thinking about this for a while. I'm sure if I redid this list later in the day, it would be very different...

1. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
2. Children of Men
3. Inside Llewyn Davis
4. The Fountain
5. 25th Hour
6. Synecdoche, New York
7. Never Let Me Go
8. The Social Network
9. No Country for Old Men
10. A Separation

Notes:

Jesse James is, today, my favorite movie ever.

Children of Men continues to grow in relevance. One of, if not the best, depiction of dystopia ever put onscreen, the result of the filmmaker's astute design and hindsight. The film has become a mirror.

The Fountain is a beautiful piece of cinema precisely because it's a compromise. Aronofsky's most impressive and touching output.

25th Hour is one of the great critiques of post-9/11 America.

Synecdoche - depression distilled in cinematic form. Up there with Ikiru in terms of perfect endings. If you don't cry, you don't have a soul.

The Social Network could very well be the defining film of the millennial generation.

Now, some leftovers off the top of my head...

1) The Conjuring 2
Exceptionally good allegory, as well as just great horror sequel. Anti-nationalism and promotion of left-wing politics co-exist extremely well with TC2's story of demonic terror.

2) Inception
Great momentum, and character interactions. One of the very best film structures ever created.

3) The Force Awakens
Despite being a Star Wars film, TFA is meaningful in ways that truly elevate the brand.

4) Spectre
Honours the Bond formula, but more impressively combines the formula with coolness and humane writing. M and Max Denbigh's clash rivals Bond and Oberhauser's.

5) The Fellowship of the Ring
Different to the sequels, which lacked the groundedness and balance of Fellowship. Visually great yet not over the top.

6) Lemony Snicket
Jim Carrey was an appropriate choice to play Olaf - as was Billy Connolly to be in the film. Unfortunate Events beats many other films that are directly about emotional storytelling.

7) Total Recall
The best remake ever made. End of story.

8) Halloween (2007)
Not the best remake, but only just after Total Recall; gives intellectual depth to the Myers mythos while at the same time not destroying the original status of Michael Myers.
(like Conjuring 2, is an effective attack on right-wing politics)

9) Wreck It-Ralph
Perhaps the best Disney animated movie of all time.

10) Breaking Dawn Part 1

I like that list alot. Disagree with alot of it but it has a good mix of mainstream and non and it's not the typical choices. Too many lists have Mulholland Drive and In The Mood For Love at the top (i adore both for the record) and Tree of Life as the best of this decade, good to see something different.

Here's the top 25 in the 2017 TSPDT best of the 21st Century for comparison:

1 1 In the Mood for Love Wong Kar-wai 2000 Hong Kong 97
2 2 Mulholland Dr. Lynch, David 2001 France 147
3 3 Yi yi Yang, Edward 2000 Taiwan 173
4 9 There Will Be Blood Anderson, Paul Thomas 2007 USA 158
5 7 Cache Haneke, Michael 2005 France 117
6 8 Tree of Life, The Malick, Terrence 2011 USA 139
7 5 Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Gondry, Michel 2004 USA 108
8 4 Spirited Away Miyazaki, Hayao 2001 Japan 124
