OLD TIME ROCK 'N ROLL TOURNAMENT

Tools

ROUND 2 DAY 2
Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up VS. Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love
Astley is pop. Led Zep are rock. Easy choice

Dion - Runaround Sue VS. The Byrds - Turn Turn Turn
Tough match

The Guess Who - Albert Flasher VS. I Got My Mojo Working - Bonnie Raitt
Not sure what the second song was, but the first was cool number

Chuck Berry - C'est La Vie (You Never Can Tell) VS. Frijid Pink-House of the Rising Sun
I prefer the Animals' version of Rising Sun.

Humble Pie - I Don't Need No Doctor VS. Fleetwood Mac - Monday Morning
Two kickass tunes, but I have soft spot for the Mac

The Eagles - In The City VS. Phil Collins - Easy Lover
I love Phil, but his song is more pop. In The City has recently become one of my top favorite Eagles songs

R.E.M. - Drive VS. Journey - Feeling That Way/Anytime
I love REM, but that Journey track or tracks have recently become my favorite song of theirs. Straight out and gritty 70's rock 'n roll

Kiss - I Was Made For Lovin' You VS. The Kingsmen - Louie Louie
Louie Louie is awesome, but KISS wins this easily

ROUND 1 DAY 2

Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up VS. Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love

I actually liked the first when it came out. I must have been going through an awkward phase.

Dion - Runaround Sue VS. The Byrds - Turn Turn Turn

I have always liked the first more.

The Guess Who - Albert Flasher VS. I Got My Mojo Working - Bonnie Raitt

Respect for Raitt, but I just like The Guess Who more.

C'est La Vie ( (You Never Can Tell )--Chuck Berry VS. Frijid Pink-House of the Rising Sun

I love that psychedelic version.

Humble Pie - I Don't Need No Doctor VS. Fleetwood Mac - Monday Morning

Close match; I like both.

The Eagles - In The City VS. Phil Collins - Easy Lover

Easy call, but I don't dislike the second.

R.E.M. - Drive VS. Journey - Feeling That Way/Anytime

There couldn't be a bigger blowout. I dislike R.E.M. and the other is one of my biggest favorites. I nominated it a couple times before; maybe that's when you got into it Mojo?

Kiss - I Was Made For Lovin' You VS. The Kingsmen - Louie Louie

Toughest call of the round, and the reasons why are not suitable for most adults to hear.

ROUND 1 DAY 2

Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up VS. Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love

Dion - Runaround Sue VS. The Byrds - Turn Turn Turn

The Guess Who - Albert Flasher VS. I Got My Mojo Working - Bonnie Raitt
Not crazy about either one, but I'm voting for The Guess Who on principle, since that Bonnie Raitt song is from 2000.

C'est La Vie ( (You Never Can Tell )--Chuck Berry VS. Frijid Pink-House of the Rising Sun
I'd have voted the other way if it had been The Animals. Not digging the Frijid Pink vocal.

Humble Pie - I Don't Need No Doctor VS. Fleetwood Mac - Monday Morning

The Eagles - In The City VS. Phil Collins - Easy Lover

R.E.M. - Drive VS. Journey - Feeling That Way/Anytime

Kiss - I Was Made For Lovin' You VS. The Kingsmen - Louie Louie

Round 1 Day 2

This round had some songs I wasn't too familiar with, which made it fun to explore but a little harder to choose. Sometimes felt I could do more justice to a song if I'd heard it a few times more. But I just went with a first instinct- and here goes. And btw I' m not sure I should post so many comments - got carried away here; in the future I can try to be less......verbose

1- Led Zeppelin WHOLE LOTTA LOVE
( Rick astly - never gonna give you up)

2- The Byrds - TURN TURN TURN
(dion - runaround sue)

3- Bonnie Raitt -I GOT MY MOJO WORKING
( guess who- albert flasher)
Miss Vicky said the song was from 2000, though I' m pretty sure Bonnie has performed this for years earlier. Anyway, Bonnie's one of my all time favorites and I love the song too. I would have substituted Muddy Waters great version, if I knew about the date - too late now tho)

4- Chuck Berry C'EST LA VIE (YOU NEVER CAN TELL)
- a happy love story that puts a smile on my face and makes my feet want to dance.
( frijid pink - house of the rising sun)

5-Humble Pie - I DON'T NEED NO DOCTOR -
I've heard versions I've liked better than this live one, including one by Ray Charles - but
I' m giving it the nod for the song)
(fleetwood mac - Monday morning)

6-didn't know either song , slight edge to
The Eagles - IN THE CITY
( phil collins - easy lover)

7- didn't know either song here but the REM song was strangely intriguing
R.E.M. DRIVE
(journey - feeling that way/anytime)

8- You know I am not familiar with the work of KIss. So I was pleasantly surprised that I really got into their song. May have picked it in a different match up.
But here's the thing: in every generation there comes along a song so loud and raucous and meaningless it makes parents worldwide just cringe and cry out "You call THAT music???"
And man, is this song loud and meaningless . I mean I can' t even make out the words , can you?
But hey, it's got a good beat ( and a good riff) and ya can dance to it- so jmho : THAT'S rock and roll.

8- The Kingsman - LOUIE LOUIE
( kiss - I was made for loving you)

Women will be your undoing, Pépé
ROUND 1 DAY 2

Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up VS. Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love
Been a Zeppelin fan since childhood since I listened to their first album that my eldest sister won at a carnival back in the mid 70s.

Dion - Runaround Sue VS. The Byrds - Turn Turn Turn
One of SOOOO many tough choices

The Guess Who - Albert Flasher VS. I Got My Mojo Working - Bonnie Raitt
Gotta lotta love for the first one and prefer Muddy's version of the second though Bonnie does it honor

C'est La Vie ( (You Never Can Tell )--Chuck Berry VS. Frijid Pink-House of the Rising Sun
I really love both of these - very VERY tough choice

Humble Pie - I Don't Need No Doctor VS. Fleetwood Mac - Monday Morning
this is one of Mac's I do enjoy but oh how I love me some Pie

The Eagles - In The City VS. Phil Collins - Easy Lover
never liked Collins and always loved Eagles

R.E.M. - Drive VS. Journey - Feeling That Way/Anytime
The really early Journey songs are the ones I like and this is one of them

Kiss - I Was Made For Lovin' You VS. The Kingsmen - Louie Louie
belonged to the KISS Army as a tot, but I have to go with The Kingsmen

Sexy Celebrity

Round 1, Day 3

1. Sister Christian
2. Run Through the Jungle
3. Steve Winwood
4. Forget Me Nots
5. My City Was Gone
6. Separate Ways
7. Roll on Down the Highway
8. Positively Fourth Street

ROUND 1 DAY 3

Night Ranger - Sister Christian VS. Apricot Brandy- Rhinoceros

The second is good funky music though.

Queen - Killer Queen VS. Creedance Clearwater Revival - Run Through The Jungle

However that is one of my favorite Queen songs.

Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze VS. Back in the High Life Again - Steve Winwood

But I have grown to like Steve Winwood more as I've gotten older.

Loverboy-Turn Me Loose VS. Patrice Rushen - Forget Me Nots

One of my favorites.

John Parr - Naughty Naughty VS. The Pretenders - My City Was Gone

Never cared much for The Pretenders.

Journey - Separate Ways VS. The Beatles - Getting Better

Not one of my favorites from either band.

B.T.O.-Roll on Down the Highway VS. Lindsey Buckingham - Soul Drifter

Boy do I love to listen to that loud.

Paul McCartney & The Wings - Junior's Farm VS. Positively Fourth Street - Bob Dylan

One of my favorites from Dylan.

ROUND 1 DAY 3

Night Ranger - Sister Christian VS. Apricot Brandy- Rhinoceros
I don't think I've heard that second one before. It's good but I tend not to favor instrumentals.

Queen - Killer Queen VS. Creedance Clearwater Revival - Run Through The Jungle
Both great songs, but CCR gets the edge.

Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze VS. Back in the High Life Again - Steve Winwood
I used to listen to Hendrix a lot, but don't really anymore for some reason. Great stuff. Never been overly impressed with Winwood, even when I saw him in concert (he toured with Eric Clapton).

Loverboy-Turn Me Loose VS. Patrice Rushen - Forget Me Nots
Both great songs, but I don't think "Forget Me Nots" qualifies as Rock N Roll. Even if it does, it's no match for the energy of "Turn Me Loose."

John Parr - Naughty Naughty VS. The Pretenders - My City Was Gone
I typically don't like female singing voices, but Chrissie Hynde is an exception. Also didn't care for "Naughty Naughty" at all.

Journey - Separate Ways VS. The Beatles - Getting Better
I've never been big on The Beatles and "Getting Better" just doesn't do anything for me. Love the Journey song.

B.T.O.-Roll on Down the Highway VS. Lindsey Buckingham - Soul Drifter
Nothing against Bachman Turner Overdrive and I'm sure they'll win this match easily, but one of these songs is by my favorite living musician and the other one isn't.

Paul McCartney & The Wings - Junior's Farm VS. Positively Fourth Street - Bob Dylan
That's a good Dylan song but - as much as I'd like to give my vote to one of the few surviving Wilburys - I like the McCartney song better.

Women will be your undoing, Pépé
ROUND 1 DAY 3

Night Ranger - Sister Christian VS. Apricot Brandy- Rhinoceros
Going with Apricot Brandy. Great riff

Queen - Killer Queen VS. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Run Through The Jungle
Disgustingly hard call, but. . .

Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze VS. Back in the High Life Again - Steve Winwood
I'm going to say it: Scuse me while I kiss the sky

Loverboy-Turn Me Loose VS. Patrice Rushen - Forget Me Nots
Not too crazy about either, but in the end, if I have to choose

John Parr - Naughty Naughty VS. The Pretenders - My City Was Gone
same goes with this one

Journey - Separate Ways VS. The Beatles - Getting Better
These are actually pretty close, but having to choose. . .

B.T.O.-Roll on Down the Highway VS. Lindsey Buckingham - Soul Drifter
Definitely go with BTO

Paul McCartney & The Wings - Junior's Farm VS. Positively Fourth Street - Bob Dylan
A helluva of a relatively unknown gem by Paul

ROUND 1 DAY 3

Night Ranger - Sister Christian VS. Apricot Brandy- Rhinoceros
I've grown kinda tired of Sister Christian, but it's still the better of the two rockers in this match. The second was pretty cool.

Queen - Killer Queen VS. Creedance Clearwater Revival - Run Through The Jungle
Tough match! I'm going with CCR

Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze
VS. Back in the High Life Again - Steve Winwood
Another tough one. I'll go with Purple Haze because it's possibly my favorite Hendrix song

Loverboy-Turn Me Loose VS. Patrice Rushen - Forget Me Nots
I like the second one, but I don't consider it a rock song. The first is badass

John Parr - Naughty Naughty
VS. The Pretenders - My City Was Gone
Pretenders have far better songs than that filler track. I really like Naughty Naughty.

Journey - Separate Ways VS. The Beatles - Getting Better
Tough one! I'm going with Getting Better because it's recently become one of my favorite Beatles songs

B.T.O.-Roll on Down the Highway VS. Lindsey Buckingham - Soul Drifter
Never was a fan of Lindsay Buckingham as a solo artist, and that song did not help. The first was a cool rocker

Paul McCartney & The Wings - Junior's Farm VS. Positively Fourth Street - Bob Dylan
Dylan has plenty of great songs but that is not one of my favorites. I love Junior Farm.

Round 1 Day 3

Good round, with three of my original picks in here. I was interested to see if I would still prefer my own songs
( spoiler , yes I did )

1- Rhinocerous - APRICOT BRANDY
(night ranger -sister christian)

2- Creedence Clearwater Revival -RUN THROUGH THE JUNGLE
(queen -killer queen)

3- Steve Winwood - BACK IN THE HIGH LIFE AGAIN
(jimi Hendrix - purple rain)
Looked like a tough choice; great Hendrix song ; even tho I nominated High Life. But once I listened to both, I just knew Back in the High Life was the one I wanted to listen to over and over again - great lyrics, melding perfectly with the tight instrumental back up , great melody, great voice, and nice theme too.

4- Patrice Rushen - FORGET ME NOTS
(loverboy- turn me loose)

5- The Pretenders - MY CITY WAS GONE
(john parr - naughty naughty )
a toss up really , went by my mood of the day, could be different tomorrow)

6- The Beatles -GETTING BETTER
( journey- separate ways)

7- Lyndsey Buckingham -SOUL DRIFTER
(b.t.o. roll on down the highway)
Not an easy choice here either, and wasn't so wild about the lyrics in Soul Drifter, plus it was more pop than rock. But the whole song just had such a nice feel to it.

8-BOB DYLAN - POSITIVELY FOURTH STREET

Admiiting my bias here, but for me there is no one else better than Dylan. No one even exists . And is there any other musical style except rock to bring it on home in song, when someone throws mud and manure in your face?
Haven't heard anyone else who has ever said it better when facing down a personal betrayal.

"I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes" .....and onward .... to the punchline Lmao.

ROUND 1 DAY 3
Night Ranger - Sister Christian VS. Apricot Brandy- Rhinoceros
Queen - Killer Queen VS. Creedance Clearwater Revival - Run Through The Jungle
Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze VS. Back in the High Life Again - Steve Winwood
Loverboy-Turn Me Loose VS. Patrice Rushen - Forget Me Nots
John Parr - Naughty Naughty VS. The Pretenders - My City Was Gone
Journey - Separate Ways VS. The Beatles - Getting Better
B.T.O.-Roll on Down the Highway VS. Lindsey Buckingham - Soul Drifter
Paul McCartney & The Wings - Junior's Farm VS. Positively Fourth Street - Bob Dylan

ROUND 1 DAY 4

Gary Lewis and the Playboys - This Diamond Ring VS. Neil Young-Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)
I really like the music of "Hey Hey, My My," but I just don't like Neil Young's voice.

Spirit-I Got a Line on You VS. Sympathy for the Devil - Rolling Stones
I'm not a Stones fan, but that's one of their better songs and the Spirit one just wasn't doing it for me.

Back in the Day -Ahmad VS. Rare Earth - Get Ready
Easy choice since the first one isn't Rock N Roll.

Montrose - Rock Candy VS. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - I Need to Know
"Rock Candy" is good, but it's not Tom Petty.

Norman Greenbaum - Spirit in the Sky VS. Michael McDonald - Sweet Freedom
Sweet Freedom is okay, but sounds more pop to me.

Toto - Hold The Line VS. Keith Richards - Take It So Hard
I didn't even know Richards had solo music and now that I know I'd like to forget again. Terrible voice.

John Lennon - Hold On VS. The Mamas and the Papas - Creeque Alley
"Hold On" is pretty, but I've loved "Creeque Alley" for many years.

Huey Lewis - The Power of Love VS. The Nashville Teens - Tobacco Road
I like the music of Tobacco Road, but not the voices. Huey is fun.

Round 1, Day 4

1. This Diamond Ring
2. I Got a Line on You
3. Rare Earth
4. Rock Candy
5. Spirit in the Sky
6. Hold the Line
7. Creeque Alley
8. The Power of Love

ROUND 1 DAY 4

Gary Lewis and the Playboys - This Diamond Ring VS. Neil Young-Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)

They don't call him The Godfather of Grunge for nothing.

Spirit-I Got a Line on You VS. Sympathy for the Devil - Rolling Stones

Two of my biggest favorites. I'll go with the first since it's my nom and likely to get rolled anyway.

Back in the Day -Ahmad VS. Rare Earth - Get Ready

I nominated the second, but then SC told me Ed already beat me to it.

Montrose - Rock Candy VS. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - I Need to Know

Liked the first but one of my favorites from Petty.

Norman Greenbaum - Spirit in the Sky VS. Michael McDonald - Sweet Freedom

Was never a big fan of either, but at least I'm not sick of the second.

Toto - Hold The Line VS. Keith Richards - Take It So Hard

Believe it or not, since we last did this, I've even grown to like Africa.

John Lennon - Hold On VS. The Mamas and the Papas - Creeque Alley

Wasn't crazy about the first.

Huey Lewis - The Power of Love VS. The Nashville Teens - Tobacco Road

Close match.

ROUND 1 DAY 4

Gary Lewis and the Playboys - This Diamond Ring VS. Neil Young-Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)
The first one was not my thing. I've always loved that song by Neil

Spirit-I Got a Line on You VS. Sympathy for the Devil - Rolling Stones
I do not like the devil, but I sure like this song

Back in the Day -Ahmad VS. Rare Earth - Get Ready
The first one should not be in this tourney

Montrose - Rock Candy VS. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - I Need to Know
Easy choice here. Tom Petty is a rock giant.

Norman Greenbaum - Spirit in the Sky VS. Michael McDonald - Sweet Freedom
I love the 2nd song, it's my favorite Michael McDonald song, but it's more pop. The first one is a rock classic

Toto - Hold The Line VS. Keith Richards - Take It So Hard
Tough match! Hold the Line is a real stomper, and the second is Keith being a complete badass without Mick at his side. He actually wrote that song for the Rolling Stones, but due to a fallout with Mick at the time, he ended up doing a solo album and sang the song himself.

John Lennon - Hold On VS. The Mamas and the Papas - Creeque Alley
John Lennon's personal songs, which are a vast majority of his solo work, are pure gold. Hold On is probably my favorite song of his. The second did not do anything for me

Huey Lewis - The Power of Love VS. The Nashville Teens - Tobacco Road
You can't beat Huey Lewis that easily
