Eliza Kazan spent the last 13 years of his career making pretty crappy movies.. But who are the ones who were consistent? If you can't think of any, feel free to also name ones that couldn't, and explain why.

I go with Vittorio De Sica and John Huston, who made some favorites of his like "Fat City" and "Wise Blood" (the latter being one that was much better the second time).

De Sica especially pioneered the many movements in cinema -- Italian comedy early on (starring and directing), neo-realism, Commedia all'italiana... And unlike most Italian directors, he actually acted in many great roles, had a career before directing, but did both at simultaneously. His acting was top-notch in "General Della Rovere".

Ingmar Bergman and Akira Kurosawa are the two big ones
Bergman is a great example. I didn't like Dersa Uzula, but definitely have to complete both of their filmography.
