Rabid (2017)

Survivor 5s #2 Bitch
David Cronenberg's 1977 zombie body-horror hit, Rabid, has been given the green light to be remade. It'll be directed by...

Jen and Sylvia Soska!!

The Canadian twins made their most notable addition to the genre with their rape-and-revenge body horror, American Mary that starred Katharine Isabelle as the titular anti-hero.

(Katharine Isobel Murray as Ms Mason in one of her now most famous roles!)

No details have been released about the casting. I'm praying they cast Katharine Isabelle, having worked with her on See No Evil 2 as well. Both partnerships saw Ms Isabelle receive various awards and nominations, immortalising her as a modern scream queen.

But I'm hopeful for this, it's about time the Soska sisters returned to do what they do best, and I can't wait! I'll keep updating this as more news comes in!

Any clue if Cronenberg gave them the go ahead or did somebody else own the rights? This is one of his pictures that I haven't watched yet.

I think they have the rights, the sisters compared this to Aja's The Hills Have Eyes!

I'll be slightly fuming if they didn't get permission, but they were contacted first to do this, so it seems to check out! They know body horror too, so I think they'll pull it off!

Wanna Date? Got Any Money?
American Mary was good and it definitely got me to pay attention to them, but I'm usually a bit hesitant to say anyone really "deserves" to do a remake. Also, I understand the praise they get for AM, but I think it's a little too early to tell if they really know what their doing or not. A major reason I say this is because "See No Evil 2" was not very enjoyable and their segment in ABC's of Death 2 was also not something I was a fan of, the title of their short "Torture Porn" was the best part of the whole shebang. However, I don't think I've seen their first short film and that very well could be fantastic and change my opinion entirely. Or reinforce how I currently feel.... Either way, I'm gonna have to see it to say I did.

All that being said, I probably feel like this because I'm a huge Cronenberg fanboy and (in my opinion anyway) he's a national treasure. But really, can you argue with Shivers, Rabid, eXistenZ, Scanners, Videodrome and The Fly as being some of the finest examples of this genre? But don't mind cranky old me, I bitch about horror about as much as I extol it.

I think it will work mainly because their films following American Mary have been studio films and so I don't think they'll have had as much creative freedom as they probably would have liked. American Mary was the only film they wrote and directed (except Dead Hooker in a Trunk but that was a student film ) but I don't think it's a coincidence that it was also their best one. But yeah, it could just be a fluke like you said at the same time, it is a bit early to definitively say.

I don't know whether the sisters will be writing the remake anyway, but I hope they do, they're very capable. And I haven't seen the original, but apparently this film was one of his weaker efforts, and those are the kind of films that should be remade (I don't think they should be a thing, but if they're going to do them, I'd rather they rehashed flawed films that had a lot of potential like this one). We'll just have to wait and see though, this might not even get made, they were going to make a film called Plastic that never materialised into anything.

"Weaker effort" my arse. This and Shivers are two favourites of Cronenberg. Throw in The Brood and you've got his three best.

I was just reading what other people had stated, honey!

I love the original Rabid, and it's low-budget, aged charm is the reason the remake won't be able to touch it's greatness.

Hmm, I'm really going to have to try and catch this now!

It's currently being advertised on IMDb not as a remake, but as a sequel! The Soska sisters are still attached to direct, yet no one has currently been cast. March 2017 seems like a preliminary release date, too!

Sorry if I'm rude but I'm right
I like the first image in the first post. Very kinky!
