Say Goodbye to Blockbuster in 2011?

Blockbuster was once the mecca of rentals. While indie metropolitan stores may have always reigned supreme in terms of stock and scope, Blockbuster was the "it" locale for the rest of the country. It wasn't so long ago when stores would be packed on a Friday evening as people rushed to grab the new releases, and shelves stocked sure-to-be-there bets -- films that weren't guaranteed because no one was going to the store, but because they'd have huge piles of discs.

Now Blockbuster is a movie ghost town. After the onslaught of Netflix and Redbox, the end has been near for a while. The company has managed to hold on, just barely, but financial types are now expecting the end to come in 2011.

Blockbuster is near the top of 24/7 Wall St's new list of brands expected to disappear by the end of 2011. The company is currently considering Chapter 11, and it lost another $65 million last quarter. 6,000 stores are still left, but 24/7 believes that the only life left in the company is the kiosk/delivery rental methods. "Its brick-and-mortar business is dead."

It just goes to show you how much of any movie business relies on the casual moviegoer, not the eager-to-watch-everything cinephile. I always, and wrongly, thought that video stores would stay around for the increased options, the older films, and the immediacy the system awarded. You wouldn't have to plan a night in with friends, they could just head to the local store with you and decide between the old and the new.

With streaming, members were offered the immediacy mail could never provide, popping the last piece into Blockbuster's death puzzle. Netflix-free Canada might have to wait for Blockbuster's death knell to prod zip.ca to rival the 'flix in title options and streaming, but chances are that in the U.S., most folks won't really feel the impact of Blockbuster's death. All the company can hope for is a nice influx of buyers when all of their dvds hit the 5-for-$20 bin.

Writings been on the wall for awhile, personally i believe the future is is in the Video on demand expansion of available titles in your digital cable package.

As a matter of personal shopping ethics, we don't actually use teh big block store ourselves, though I would be fibben if i said i won't be taking advantage of the Going out of business sale.

I go very, very rarely. Used to go often, but Netflix really did change everything. The only time I've gone is when I want to watch something right away and can't wait a day or two for it to come via Netflix, and it isn't available via Netflix's instant streaming option. For example, after finishing up season 2 of Mad Men a week and a half ago, I wanted to roll right into season 3, so I rented a few of the discs so I wouldn't have to wait. That's pretty much the only circumstance under which I rent things in the traditional sense.

Blockbuster as we knew it has been dead for a long time. The only question over the last 3-4 years has been whether or not they'd adapt quickly enough, and whether or not their rival Netflix-esque service would hold its own. It didn't (which surprises me a little, given some of its advantages), so that's that.

Those video machines in the markets didn't help. This ain't good for the movie companies who have been resisting changes they think will hurt their DVD sales. Without Blockbuster around their business has gotten a little harder.

Already been to three different blockbusters for their going out of business sales in Jax. It's pretty awesome, haha. I haven't rented a movie from Blockbuster in years but there is one right by my house and i buy movies from there a lot, so im a bit sad. But this doesn't surprise me.

Here in Winnipeg, we have been using a wonderful private shop called Movie Village. The beauty of thier setup, is they were sorta the anti- blockbuster. They have diversity first and foremost. Besides the obvious sorting by genres, they also have bins of dvd's sorted by actors, and directors. as well as foreign films, documentaries and gay and lesbian titles (no porn). $26 /mnth allows unlimited rentals within that time-frame. (3 items at a time).

Of course they don't have 132 copies of the latest greatest micheal bay extravaganza..but to be perfectly frank, thats part of the appeal for me and folks like me i think.

I wish there was a place in my town like that. There is nothing here but that Blockbuster and wal-mart. Two hours away there is a Moviestop that i sometimes get to visit.Whenever i do i leave with about 8 movies.

Do you find that some of the movies you purchase are really scratched up? I remember when my parents would rent movies from Blockbuster a lot of them were really scratched.

Actually, no. I couldn't believe it. Really great movies too. (Taxi Driver, Insomnia, Boogie Nights). Perfect condition for about 3 bucks each.

Wow that is great.

Didn't Block Buster sign an agreement with certain studios (I forgot which ones) that they will be able to rent and sale their films 30 days before Netflix or Redbox will be allowed to even buy them...

I think that might have been the other one that's already out of business. Hollywood Video.

Anywho, Blockbuster reaped what they sowed. Don't cry for them. I don't care how much money they supposedly lost last year. The guy that owns Blockbuster made a mint before that. I used to be a big customer myself until they got rid of VHS, which, at the time was marketed as this big push to update the home video world. All they really did was alienate people like me.

At the time of their switch they actually were slightly ahead of the curve as there were still a large number of homes with VHS players. Hell, there still are. I have three myself. The problem really was that most of what they carried and still do I expect, is mostly mainstream.

Oh well, I've already said this numerous times in other threads. Soon there will be no need to ever leave your house to get a movie. And if you purposely go to a store to buy a movie in the future you'll most likely be doing it because you simply can't find it anywhere else or maybe you're just feeling nostalgic.

That's pretty funny really. They gave this "deal" about four months before they scrapped it huh?

Now that I think about it, Hollywood Video used to get movies from certain suppliers. I don't remember exactly as its been years since I rented. I just remember going there and they wouldn't have a certain title and when asked why they gave me some wierd reason. I guess that's what I thinking of.

I talked to a guy I know who works at a Block Buster and he said the one he works at is independently owned and that if BB goes belly up, all it will do to them is make them change their name...

A video store near me has the exact same set up 'actors, Directors, Best picture Oscar for each year, foreign, arty'. Very limited though, especially Eastwood Only the most celebrated Movies he Directed.

I've started to rent Movies from the those rent a box things, in your shopping centres, new releases that is. It's cheaper, no fuss, and convenient. If I want to browse, I go the video store I previously mentioned.
