The Personal Recommendation Hall of Fame IV

I never could get the hang of Thursdays.
I've already seen Night Moves (2013)... it was picked for me in the second personal rec hall of fame and it is crossed off my list.

So either the person who nominated it meant Night Moves (1975) or they're going to have to pick again

I'll send a pm

Pretty sure it's on the 100 years...100 thrills list.

yeah I crossed that off...thought I was going crazy(er)

Thought someone would pick DUNE, The Cook The Thief his wife and his Lover, Doctor Zhivago, or Matter of Life and Death.

movies can be okay...
Which cut of Apocalypse Now do y'all recommend?

These are the movies I watch:

Alice in Wonderland (1951)
Bob Le Flambeur (1956)
Bullitt (1968)
City Lights (1931)
The Conversation (1974)
The Full Monty (1997)
The General (1926)
Paris, Texas (1984)
The Player (1992)
Room at the Top (1959)
Secrets & Lies (1996)
Zodiac (2007)

Nice choices everyone! I'm a little dubious about one of those, but who knows I might end up loving it. Three of them I haven't heard of...and a few of them have been on my must see list. So a good haul
Which one?

Room at the Top (1959), Secrets & Lies (1996), The Full Monty (1997) are all on the same page

Paris, Texas (1984), The Player (1992), Zodiac (2007), The Conversation (1974) those are all slow burn epics

City Lights (1931), The General (1926) that's a fun two-fer

Alice in Wonderland (1951) - weird that you never saw this
Bob Le Flambeur (1956) - you should like it
Bullitt (1968) - 50/50 but it's a classic

I'm not saying edit: I did post it.
Alice in Wonderland (1951) - weird that you never saw this
I've said this before but I grew up before the era of DVDs or even VCRs so I never watched childhood movies over and over like most people have...We only had 1 TV in our house when I was a kid, so movies weren't accessible to me. If something like Alice in Wonderland was on TV, my day would not have wanted to watch it, so I probably watched an episode of Gunsmoke instead.

2022 Mofo Fantasy Football Champ
The Godfather II (1974)- had to see at some point. Hope to like it even more than number 1
The Hurt Locker (2008)- good chance I'll dig it
Make Way for Tomorrow (1937)- almost watched numerous times not sure what I'll think
The Red Shoes (1948)- could go either way
Scott Pilgrim vs The World (2010)- weird pick and know nothing of it
Sexy Beast (2000)- again don't know much of it
Sullivan's Travels (1941)- cool another Sturges
Taste of Cherry (1997)- haven't cared for Kiarastomi much but hope this hits
Trainspotting (1996)- never thought I'd really like it but gotta give it a fair shake
True Romance (1993)- probably will like
Viridiana (1961)- super high hopes
When Harry Met Sally (1989)- probably will like

The Birds, the Bees, and the Italians (1966) - not a big Italian fan but this has potential.
Black Dynamite (2009) - I think this will do well
The Court Jester (1955) - Yeah I don't know what people were thinking with this one.
The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser (1974) - I plan really sitting down with this one.
Fantastic Voyage (1966) - good pick, this is up my alley
The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters (2007) - dark horse to win
Man on Wire (2008) - the other dark horse to win
The Poseidon Adventure (1972)
Pursued (1947) - I don't know why people don't pick noirs for me they always do well
The Rules of the Game (1939) - I watched this in High School and forgot everything about it so really looking forward to this as an adult
Saturday Night Fever (1977) - not really my cup of tea but I have to get over it
The Straight Story (1999) - never watched it Lynch is hot and cold for me but it was on my list.

The trick is not minding
Which cut of Apocalypse Now do y'all recommend?
Theatrical imo. Redux has some scenes that actually seem to drag it down, strangely enough.

I recently rewatched this again a few months ago and man….

The trick is not minding
Also, I noticed more films (Red Road, Mustang, Wendy and Lucy) from the “Directed by Women” list were selected then normally. That’s good, plenty of interesting films there.

Which cut of Apocalypse Now do y'all recommend?
Theatrical, then maybe seek out the alternate scenes somewhere else. I think they are interesting enough to watch, but the film doesn't need them.

Thoughts on my picks:

3 Women (1977) - Have yet to watch anything by Altman, and if I were to this probably would've been my first pick as well.
Apocalypse Now (1979) - Almost watched it on numerous occasions, I expect to love it.
Citizen Kane (1941) - I managed to stay spoiler free throughout my life despite how big of a classic this movie is, so I'm excited to see what it's about and see how it will sit with me.
Dark City (1998) - Not as much of a classic (I think) as the other noms, so that alone excites me and gives me more variety.
The Devil's Backbone (2001) - I also almost seen this way back when. Obviously don't think it will be my favourite among these noms, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it.
L. A. Confidential (1997) - Just saw Wonder Boys recently which was kind of bad, but I know this is known to be the best from this director, and it's a classic too so...
The Others (2001) - I've actually been spoiled about the twist in this film so that's a little disappointing.
Platoon (1986) - A classic! Not much to say though, and no clue if I'll like it as much as other people seem to.
Psycho (1960) - Yeah I should see more from Hitchcock. Loved Dial M, Rope, and Rebecca.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994) - Is this still first place in that Top 100 imdb?
Sweet Smell of Success (1957) - Lovely pick! Excited to watch it. The poster is pretty appealing.
Woman in the Dunes (1964) - This is the style of film I usually go for so I'm glad this was nominated.

Overall, a lot of variety, I can already feel I'll have new favourites by the end of it all, and it will surely be interesting seeing how I rank one above the other.

Ok, some quick thoughts on my picks...

An Autumn Afternoon (1962)
Black Narcissus (1947)
The Double Life of Veronique (1991)
Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010)
High Noon (1952)
The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957)
The Innocents (1961)
Mustang (2015)
Tootsie (1982)
Touch of Evil (1958)
The Virgin Spring (1960)
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf (1966)
Most of these are films that have been more or less on my radar. I also see that someone picked up on my interest on The Virgin Spring from the MoFo Foreign Film thread Considering that I've seen 5 or so Bergman in a relatively short span of time, why not keep trucking? Also nice to see another Ozu film, considering how much I've loved the two I've seen.

Mustang is the only one I hadn't heard of. Turkish drama. Should be interesting.

Now Tootsie is the only one I've really never felt any impulse to see. I've kinda fell off comedies lately, but it's Sidney Pollack and Dustin Hoffman, so c'mon. Gotta see it at some point.

Thanks to everybody!

My movies

Alice in Wonderland (1951)
This is a nice choice for me as I haven't seen many classic Disney animated films. Animated movies are a bit of a long shot for me. I've liked the ones from the past Personal Recs but not loved them.

Bob Le Flambeur (1956)
French 1950s, Casino robbery caper...sounds good to me. It reminds me of an episode of Star Trek Deep Space Nice, which is a plus!

Bullitt (1968)

I believe I seen this at the theater with my parents way back in 1968 when I was a wee tyke. I don't remember a thing about it. I've always wanted to watch this as an adult.

City Lights (1931)

I was hoping this would be chose for me. I've liked or loved all the Chaplin films that I've seen so far.

The Conversation (1974)
I've heard of it, Gene Hackman is a favorite actor so hoping I like it.

The Full Monty (1997)
I didn't mean this one when I said I was dubious about one of the films, but after reading about it, maybe I should be I don't enjoy male nudity, however I do like female nudity (if it's tastefully done).

The General (1926)

Buster Keaton is the man! I had wanted to watch this for the Pre 1930s Countdown but never got around to it. Glad to see it chose.

Paris, Texas (1984)

Harry Dean Stanton & Dean Stockwell sounds good to me.

The Player (1992)

Never heard of it...but this sounds way cool: 'A Hollywood studio executive is being sent death threats by a writer whose script he rejected, but which one?'

Room at the Top (1959)
Never heard of it...BUT someone read my mind because I just seen Laurence Harvey on the old What's My Line TV show and then read about him and was planning on seeing one of his films.

Secrets & Lies (1996)
Not heard of it...BUT this sounds very interesting 'Following the death of her adoptive parents, a successful young black optometrist establishes contact with her biological mother -- a lonely white factory worker living in poverty in East London.'...

Zodiac (2007)
A bit dubious about this one, it sounds too violent for my taste and I usually hate newer movies about criminal predators stalking innocent people...call that my 'movie trigger'.
