40. MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL (1975) - Classic comedy made up entirely of classic scene after classic scene. Starts off brilliantly with one of the most cpgenius credit sequences ever and doesnt let down on its brilliance the whole way through. Also despite being such a silly film they did a great job creating the murky medieval setting.
39. BAREFOOT GEN (1983) - Harrowing anime film adapted from manga based on the authors actual experiences surviving the atomic bomb. The manga is better and goes into more detail on the situation but this movie still packs a real punch to the gut.
38. AKIRA (1988) - Like with Barefoot Gen its not as good as the manga but this is the one animated film where Im wowed by fancy big budget animation. Even today this film still looks gorgeous and its filled with so many memorable moments. Admittively i might have some nostalgic bias here.
37. THE PROMISED LAND (1975) - One of the most beautifully shot films ever! Darkly comic drama about a polish man, a Jew, and a German who try to start a textile factory and things go horribly wrong! A lot of the social commentary went over my head im sure but this was still a very gripping and enjoyable film imo.
36. CHRISTIAN F. (1981) - Based on the real life experiences of its titular character this is a very disturbing look at heroine addiction among teens. I find this a vastly more effective look at the effects of addiction than the more well known Requiem for a dream. Also the protagonist is a David Bowie fan and his music is used prominently and effectively throughout the film. Theres even a David Bowie concert! The movie takes place during the late 70s where Bowie was trying to escape his cocaine addiction so it seems extra poetic.
