You can't win an argument just by being right!
For me it comes down to Silence’s Clarice vs Manhunter’s Will and Clarice’s journey (in the film), stepping out of the shadows of those who would use her, is the one I find much more engaging.

I’ll give Manhunter (and, by extent, Hannibal) this: Will Graham is kind of tricky to endear to an audience. It think it’d be easy to cross the line into silliness with him and Mann and Petersen do very good balancing job.

I still giggle at the “you sonnofab****” line.
I still laugh at Hannibal's Okey Dokey in Hannibal. Very cringey.

I never read that article!

Also didn't hear of that shootout. So 2 new things for me.
It's a fan letter to Brian Cranston (no idea why i said article) about how much Breaking Bad meant to him and is pretty awesome - https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood...bad-fan-letter

That means basically nothing. I mean you (like everyone) hate on plenty of "iconic films", doubt you'd accept that as an argument against one of your lesser revered favourites.

The Last of the Mohicans is the only film I can rate 4 stars or more,

The rest fall short for me.

Manhunter leaves a lot to be desired.

Don't forget Mann's wonderful series Crime Story (1986-88), starring Dennis Farina and Tony Denison. Reportedly he only directed 1 episode, but he likely produced all 43.

Need to watch more of his films, have only really seen Last of the Mohicans and Public Enemies. Last of the Mohicans might be my favorite of the 2.

We've gone on holiday by mistake
How is there another Micheal Mann thread I haven't commented on?

My favourite director.

I'm sure this will differ to other lists of this kind I've done.

1. The Insider
2. Thief
3. Manhunter
4. Heat
5. Last of the Mohicans
6. Collateral
7. Ali
8. Public Enemies

Blackhat and The Keep aren't great.

My ratings are in parenthesis (using the Letterboxd scale):

1. Miami Vice (5)
2. Heat (5)
3. Blackhat (5)
4. Public Enemies (5)
5. Collateral (4.5)
6. Thief (4.5)
7. The Insider (4.5)
8. Ali (4.5)
9. Manhunter (4)
10. Last of the Mohicans (4)
11. The Jericho Mile (3.5)
12. The Keep (3.5)
13. L.A. Takedown (2)

For me...

• 1-4 are all masterpieces
• 5-8 are interchangeable and near masterpieces
• 9-12 are pretty great, but not on par with the films above them
• And L.A. Takedown is the lone ugly duckling of Mann's library; an unfortunate prototype.
