Who is the most overrated director?

Tools

I cast my vote at "M Knight Shyamalan." I mean, come on. His movies werent really THAT great, and the good that does come from them is more from the all star casts that he always has the privledge to work with. I mean, how many horrible movies do you love because they have Mel Gibson or Bruce Willis in it?

I'll say Quentin Tarantino. I liked "Reservoir Dogs". I loved "Pulp Fiction". But how many times can he make movies in a non-linear fashion with a soundtrack full of classic rock and funk hits with references to thirty year old tv shows? All I want is to see something new from him.

Quenten at least had some raw talent at one point, unlike Shymalan. The problem with Quenten is his talent is just that..raw. He made a mistake and accidentally made Pulp Fiction...and thats how great movies get made, by accident, not by big budget. Once he made that movie, he felt the preassure of making great movie after great movie after great movie. But it just didnt happen. Its hard for a guy to make movies about badasses, when he's not actually a badass himself. Thus, some of the things in his movies come across as corney and fake. He's done for, and we'll never see another good thing from him. Just like Gibson and Braveheart. We'll always watching Gibsons stuff and like it just because its Gibson, but his attempt to create in another movie what he created in Braveheart is destroying his films.

I agree. I haven't seen a movie by him that I actually like. I hated Signs. I just didn't get why people thought it was so great. It had one of the worst endings I have ever seen.

Quentin Tarantino and the Coen Bros. I've never seen a movie from any of them that I've ever enjoyed yet people love them. Shyamalan would be another but I at least liked Signs and the Sixth Sense.

Quentin is indeed overrated because of the Pulp Fiction craze, which sold Kill Bill, which sold Hostel, which will sell a zillion other projects desperate enough to put his name on them. But I think something should be said for Quentin's Jackie Brown. If i had to pick a favorite Tarantino flick, (and im hesitant), it would be this one. As the least inter-textual movie, plus its structure and all that, it stands alone from all his flicks. Following after both Pulp and Dogs, it seemed for the time that he was growing as a director. It wasnt movie magic by any means, and its distance from Tarantino's other movies make it easy to dismiss- but i think if Quentin really wanted to develop some of that talent and actually go somewhere, he should make more flicks like Jackie Brown. (Or rather, build a trend out of it.)

And personally, i think Tim Burton is pretty overrated. There is all this craze about him, mostly with Nightmere Before Christmas (Which he didnt even direct!) Yeah, ive had some fun, but he's not a god, people.

I liked Resovour Dogs. I watched it without the hype, or even knowing it was Tarentino at first. I was just simply recommended it by a friend. I enjoyed it somewhat, but I usually enjoy movies with Michael Madsen in them. All except for his horrible, horrible role in kill bill, in which he goes from a halfway descent type guy with remorse, to a laughable killer. Tim Burton definatly deserves to be on the list. This guy has never done anything good. Edward scissorhands wasnt THAT great, I mean, come on. We cant always confuse uniqueness with greatness. Batman was totally muffed up. It turned out to be a somewhat descent movie, but certainly did little to resemble the actual Batman comics, and would have been more appropriately title "The Joker" rather then batman.

First, it's M. "Night" Shyamalan. Second, good movies have good casts; that's how it works. You can't factor out the quality of the actors and actresses involved as if they weren't one of the measures of a film's quality. Third, he chose those actors and actresses. You can have a brilliantly conceived character, but it doesn't mean a thing if you don't get the right person to portray them; that's part of directing. and we have numerous examples to contradict the idea that you can throw a superstar into any role without regard for the character they're playing.

Fourth, I trust in people's ability to figure out why they're seeing a movie, and I've heard plenty of people rave about The Sixth Sense, or Unbreakable or Signs while barely mentioning Willis and/or Gibson.

Fifth, I've moved this thread to the Actors, Awards, & Directors forum. Please make sure you place new threads in the most appropriate forum, rather than simply the first one on the list.

And sixth; I've shortened your signature. It was longer than most of your posts. I've saved the original so you don't "lose" anything, but I'm going to have to ask that you keep it down a bit. There are places in your profile for most of that information. It's a signature, not a biography.

Haha, that's awesome. That is true, he is way overrated, but he does have an artsy style that can't be touched...which also gets really old really fast.

I probaly would pick Shaymalan becuase his ideas are good and creative but when he tries putting his ideas to film, it rarely has a good outcome and ends up being crap (With the exception of Sixth Sense). I thought "Signs" wasn't bad. It had good pacing and good filming but a bad screenplay.

I thought "The Sixth Sense" was really good and a far-cry/relief from the other suspense/horror/sci-fi garbage that was out at the time. Other than that, I thought his other films have stunk.

After Shaymalan, I would pick Tim Burtn, which is painful for me to do.

I'd also say Tim Burton. He's a good director, I like most of his movies, but he's just not as good as people say he is. I think the only films of his that deserve their praise are Ed Wood and Beetlejuice. And Big Fish is his most overrated.

So many great suggestions... I totally agree with Tim Burton and Tarentino...

I have trouble agreeing with Shymalan cause he hasn't been around that long really...

Shyamalan's films are indescribably awful, Unbreakable was one of the worst films ever made and The Sixth Sense wasn't much better. It's the kids; that little Hayley Joel Osment bastard makes me want to scream.

Spielberg, too, hasn't made a really good film in a long time, these days he churns out toss like AI and Munich (OK, fair enough, that wasn't as bad as AI, but it was still pretty poor, the ending in particular was atrocious). He should have hung up his boots after Saving Private Ryan or even The Last Crusade.
