Most Anticipated Films of 2017?

Tools

The Bib-iest of Nickels
2017 is upon us, and with that, brings a whole new crop of films. And, while, presently, we're out of season, feasting mostly upon the final course of yesteryear, while films of lesser respects like Monster Trucks (a film that Paramount has already made a 125 million dollar write-off for) and the fifteenth Underworld (11% on Rotten Tomatoes!) and thirtieth Resident Evil film hit theaters, we have a lot to look forward to.

Last year, The Nice Guys was my favorite of the year. I mention this because it shows that a film can come outta nowhere. Most of the films on my Most Anticipated Films of 2017 list are mainstream blockbusters, mostly because I don't know the other films exist yet. This is just a beginning of the year perspective.

Question: What are the films you're most excited to see in 2017? Feel free to mention films that are, technically, 2016 films, just now hitting wide-expansion, haven't seen yet, or are waiting for the DVD release.

2016 Leftovers:
La La Land

A Monster Calls

2017:

Science-Fiction: - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 & War of the Planet of the Apes

Horror: - Saw: Legacy & God Particle (They're saying Saw will be a reinvention, which is good. I like the concept of the films, but the story-line is overtly complicated and stupid. Either way, I feel like the best horrors I will see will be from the indies this year.)

Animation: - Captain Underpants? (Weak year for animation, hoping some more films are announced.)

Superhero: - Logan

Fantasy: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (Nobody seems to like the Pirate films. I like them. A fair bit, in-fact.)

Action: The Mummy (I want to see if Universal's new Monster Universe will suck or not) and The Dark Tower

We have at least three other threads about this very topic, but screw it, I'll play ball and say that Baby Driver is my most anticipated film of the year (runners-up include Logan, Blade Runner 2049, Alien Covenant, John Wick: Chapter Two, The Fate of the Furious and Star Wars Ep VIII)

I went ahead and looked. The latest thread about this topic is three pages down and hasn't had a post in it in two weeks. It being the start of 2017, I assumed we'd either have a thread like this fast-tracked or I'd beat someone to the punch. Moderators can merge it if they want.

I had to look up what Baby Driver was. Has it had some type of buzz that makes you excited for it? Cause, like I said, I hadn't heard of it. Edgar Wright's a pretty cool director, I really enjoyed Scott Pilgrim and World's End.

Animation
To add a little color to the discussion,

This year, Disney (who last year brought us Zootopia and Moana) is taking a hiatus this year theatrically, with Wreck It Ralph 2 and Gigantic not arriving til sometime in 2018. Laika (who brought us Kubo) has their next film slated for 2018 as well.

Pixar will be releasing Cars 3, which, to me, is a misuse of Pixar, if only because I found the first one decent at best and second to be downright horrible.

But, they'll also be releasing a film called Coco. This film will be themed around the "Day of the Dead" holiday.

Films like The Boss Baby and Despicable Me 3 plague this year a lot, and, with no judgment from me on those who enjoy them, they're not really what I'm into.

The Lego Batman Movie looks like it could be a lot of fun, but definitely not of the same depth as what The Lego Movie had.

Captain Underpants actually tops it off with me as my most anticipated animation. I don't necessarily think it will be a good film, but it will be a pleasure to see on the big screen. Only because I read these books a lot when I was a kid, the visual style seems to be on-point enough and it could be an enjoyable, silly affair.

Trainspotting 2 is the first one that springs to mind. By god, they better not screw it up!
Every time I hear about T2, I think about SLC Punk 2: Punk's Dead, and get scared. The subject matter is sort-of similar I guess, but I don't know why I always subconsciously associate Trainspotting and SLC Punk. Either way, while I'm not really all that excited, I am looking for to Trainspotting, and hope that it is good. T2's based on another book called Porno, which I haven't read. Hopefully since it's from the writer and not an original concept, everything will align well. Finger's crossed.

I'm not familiar with SLC Punk. But yeah, I'm very scared. I'm generally of the opinion that classics like that should be left alone. One can only hope that they woudn't have all signed up for it after all this time if it wasn't going to be good. But I thought that about Dumb and Dumber To and look how that worked out...

Something to comfort you, is, like I said, this is based on an actual sequel, and also, David Boyle always wanted to make this film, he said he was just waiting for the cast to become visible older.

SLC Punk's a fun film.
Synopsis from Rotten Tomatoes:
What's it like being the only punk rockers in the biggest Mormon community in the world? Stevo (Matthew Lillard) and Heroin Bob (Michael Goorjian) provide the answer to this and other questions in SLC Punk. Stevo and Bob (whose name is actually an ironic reference to his fear of needles) are two friends fresh out of college who sport mohawks and blue hair, listen to hardcore and try to live up to their own anarchist ideals while figuring out what to do with their lives. Which wouldn't make them unusual in New York or Los Angeles, but they're fish out of water in Salt Lake City, Utah, where they drink beer, chase women and pick fights with "rednecks" along side a mixed bag of metalheads, hippies, hicks and posers who are fellow outcasts in the most clean-cut community in America. In the midst of all this, Stevo's dad hopes his son will follow in his footsteps and study law at Harvard; while Stevo surprisingly has the grades, he's not sure if he wants to go. Featuring a soundtrack of mid-80's punk from The Ramones, Minor Threat, The Dead Kennedys and others, SLC Punk was chosen as the opening-night feature at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival.

Yeah, the usual operating procedure is to just bump an existing thread rather than start a new one.

Also, Edgar Wright doing another movie is all the buzz I need.

I repeat - It being the start of 2017, I assumed we'd either have a thread like this fast-tracked or I'd beat someone to the punch.

Sorry for not following the usual operating procedure, Private, don't tell the Admiral of my insubordination.

My most awaited films that are listed as 2017 on IMDb so far:

Yeh Din Ka Kissa/The Meyerowitz Stories (official title still needs to be given) ~ Came to like Noah Baumbach a lot this past year, so I'm looking forward to this one.

The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara ~ Spielberg

The Trap ~ Harmony Korine

Last Flag Flying ~ A spiritual sequel to The Last Detail directed by Richard Linklater? YES!

D'après une histoire vraie ~ Polanski!!!

Lights Out ~ De Palma!!!

Star Wars: Episode VIII ~Liked VII a lot. Hope this is of the same quality.

Logan Lucky ~ A Soderbergh heist comedy? YES!

The Beguiled ~ Might be an actually interesting remake by Sofia Coppola.

Weightless ~ Terrence Malick

Baby Driver ~ Edgar Wright!!!

T2 Trainspotting ~ Loved the original, looks good.

Blade Runner 2049 ~ The original is one of my favorite films of all time. Villeneuve might be capable enough to make a decent sequel.

There's probably a lot of stuff that I'm missing, but these seem to be the most interesting titles on my 2017 watchlist that I'm aware of so far.
What I posted in the other thread.

I'm not even sure what you mean by "fast-tracked", much less that you assumed that's what would automatically happen if such a thread existed. Also, just to be clear, did you find the existing thread from a couple of weeks ago and still decide to start a new one anyway? Next time, just bump the thread. People bump old threads all the time.

10. Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Men Tell No Tales - I keep wanting this series to be good again. Here's to more false hope...
9. Logan - Rated R Wolverine? Yes please...
8. Blade Runner 2049 - I'm still reluctant here but Villeneuve did wonders with Sicario & Prisoners so I have some faith in it.
7. The Dark Tower - I have not read the book but almost every Stephen King adapted film I have seen I've liked. Also I'll watch Idris Elba in anything he's fantastic.
6. Dunkirk - Christopher Nolan & World War 2? Take my money...
5. War for the Planet of the Apes - Have loved this Apes trilogy so far so I hope this one doesn't disappoint.
4. Star Wars: Episode 8 - My opinion on Episode 7 has dwindled in the past year since it was released but I still enjoyed it and I'm hoping Rian Johnson does for this trilogy what Episode 5 did for the OT.
3. Kingsman 2: The Golden Circle - I don't know if this movie is set in stone for this year but its current date is October 6 so i'm including it. I LOVED Kingsman and I really hope this film isn't Kick-Ass 2, please don't be Kick-Ass 2.....
2. Kong: Skull Island - Man I really hope this is good.
1. Alien: Covenant - I actually liked Prometheus and Ridley is hot off The Martian so obviously this is #1 for me.
