You can go way back before Psycho, at least to Fritz Lang's "M", which was released in 1930. As for the "most well acted", that's another question. Thankfully most of us have never encountered such a person, so we don't know HOW they act. We made up something that looks scary to us, but anybody who does any non-movie reading on the topic finds out that most of what's in the movies is wrong, as are a lot of our own stereotypes. If you're interested, take a course in psychodiagnostics or abnormal psychology.
