I think the issue here is purely a matter of taste.
N3wt's favourites are nearly all mainstream Hollywood movies, but that's his choice, and he's free to make it. I don't think it's fair to berate him over it, just as it's not fair to berate someone over wearing a Linkin Park t-shirt. I don't like N3wt's list, but it's just a matter of personal taste, if N3wt likes these films and enjoys them, then good luck to him.
I don't subscribe to popularity equating quality though. Most people are just happy to swallow what is dished out by Hollywood, most of which is garbage. People either haven't got the time, are too lazy, or lack the imagination to scratch below the surface. That to me is a real shame, because most of the dumbed down movies that pass for mainstream cinema are second rate. The fact is, look a little harder, and more often than not, you'll find something a lot better.
Other people want an explosion or brutal killing every five minutes, and don't accept special effects unless they're computer generated. The same people don't like films that are more than fifteen years old, fifteen also being their own mental age. Some people wont entertain subtitles, and don't want anything that moves them on an intellectual or emotional level. That to me suggests either immaturity, low intelligence, or both. You see a lot of people don't want to think when they watch a movie, because they see thinking as work not entertainment.
I like horror/action movies just as much as the next man, but the thought of watching only those types of films all the time...no thanks. That would be narrow minded ignorance. There's more to human beings (and film) than watching gruesome violence carried out by knife wielding idiots. There is beauty, nature, love, debate, intrigue, and these things are a lot more interesting, and satisfying. You just have to give them a chance.
