30 years after...where does 1994 rank in cinema history?

Tools

Since 2024 is almost up...thought I'd ask where do you rank 1994 in the history of cinema?

Is it even the best year in the 90s?

I think without a doubt it to me it's one of the most memorable years ever in movies.

There are the 3 heavy hitters that can compete with any year. Shawshank. Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction.

Also had Leon: The Professional, Interview With A Vampire...some other movies people liked I never saw...Ed Wood, The Quiz Show, The Crow, Natural Born Killers, Legends of The Fall

Had one of the best animated movies of all time The Lion King

Had some of the most memorable comedies of the 90s. Dumb and Dumber, Ace Ventura, The Mask, One of the Naked Guns, Clerks.

Some of the best family movies: Little Giants, Mighty Ducks, Angels In The Outfield, The Santa Clause

One of the best actions movies ever: Speed

I dunno if it's the best but I think it might be the most versatile year ever. Those first 3 along with Lion King has to put it in competition with any year. What are the other contender years?

I don't actually wear pants.
Lower than the one better than it and higher than the one not as good as it.

Pulp Fiction is a standout. I don't know if that makes the whole year stand proud. By my lights it was a rather unremarkable year with a few remarkable films.

I still have entire decades to thoroughly explore but at this point in time I'd say yes, a very strong year for cinema. Also on the business side. Video stores AND theaters were still in full effect simultaneously.

Yeah, same (as Corax).
I have Pulp Fiction and Vive L'Amour in my list.

Some reasonable films mentioned by the OP though. Plus J-C's list.

Oh, I had Il Postino down as 96. Add that one too then!

What are the other contender years?
With twice the number of movies rated 70/100 or better, my vote goes to 1999. An interesting year with an unusual amount of weird or out of the ordinary type movies, many of them very well made.

1994:

Pulp Fiction
The Endless Summer 2
The Shawshank Redemption
Forrest Gump
Maverick
Natural Born Killers

1999:

Man On The Moon
Office Space
In China They Eat Dogs
The Insider
Stir Of Echoes
The Cider House Rules
The 4th Floor
Being John Malkovich
American Beauty
Fight Club
Girl Interrupted
The Blair Witch Project

Faust is also worth mentioning. A bit weird maybe for the blockbuster only crowd but not bad.

Trouble with a capital "T"
Besides these greats which were mentioned:
Interview with the Vampire
Dumb and Dumber
Ed Wood
The Shawshank Redemption

I'll add these as classic greats:
Little Women
Muriel's Wedding

Ah yes, how could I forget that one.

Interview with the Vampire
I'm beginning to think that I'm literally the only person on earth who hates this movie.

I mainline Windex and horse tranquilizer
Forrest Gump, True Lies, The Mask, Timecop, Shawshank, Pulp Fiction, Clerks, Stargate, Leon - it wouldn't be a stretch to say it's one of my favorite years for film.

That might be a stretch. While I can't say for sure as I haven't seen it, not seeing it was a very conscious decision as I'm pretty sure I'd feel the same way about it as you do.

I think 1994 is a pretty good year, at least from my perspective. It brought me...

...my favorite film: The Shawshank Redemption

...one of my Top 5 or Top 10 films: Pulp Fiction

...one of my favorite comedies: Clerks

...one of my favorite animated/Disney films: The Lion King

...my favorite documentary: Hoop Dreams

...my favorite vampire film: Interview with the Vampire

...two of my favorite action films: Speed and True Lies

...one of my favorite dramas: Quiz Show

...three hilarious Jim Carrey films: Ace Ventura, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber (although it's been a while since I've seen The Mask)

...one of Peter Jackson's best films: Heavenly Creatures

...a fun Coen brothers film: The Hudsucker Proxy

...one of the best Freddy Krueger sequels: New Nightmare

...arguably Van Damme's best film: TimeCop

...and one of his best funniest films: Street Fighter
