Casino Royale

One of the most exciting Bond films, with great action scenes and an intriguing storyline.

Does anyone agree with me that the gritty nature and the lack of gadgets made this film more of a jason bourne film?

Welcome to the human race...
People have been calling this a Bourne knock-off since it came out.

It's certainly very low on classic Bond movie ingredients. And a more serious action / drama / thriller but nevertheless a great one. The Aston Martin, the chase scene, Mads and Eva Green make up for the lack of these ingredients. Much better movie than Jason B imho.

Recently posted a poll here on MoFo.
Which movie had the better chase scene; Point Break '91 vs Casino Royale, ended up a DRAW.

I remember hearing Bourne being mentioned more in relation to Quantum of Solace.

The old Bond formula was getting weird. Movies like Die Another Day weren't meeting Bond standards, so reinventing Bond was quite late.

Even though I like Casino Royale a lot better than Die Another Day, I didn't think that the Bond formula needed to be re-invented necessarily and the formula is still good. Still love CR though for what it is, and it's the best Craig Bond movie.

It needed more of the bond sountrack , it felt lacking in that regard, the bond tunes are barely used, and it could have used a lot more gadgets, but very clever bond film plot wise, probably the best plot with skyfall

It's been forever since I've watched Goldfinger so I can't say this with 100% certainly, but otherwise Casino Royale is the best spy movie I've ever seen. Because of Goldfinger's success the Bond films were getting cheesier every decade until they took weird turns like for Die Another Day. I like my spy movies mature and serious. Leave the cartoon logic to Spy Kids.

EDIT: I totally forgot I posted twice here.

I love the fact that this thread was revived all the way back from 2006.

But yeah, I would say this is one of the best Bond films. Not my personal favourite (Tomorrow Never Dies) but still a modern classic.

The reasons for that made sense though, and I did quite like You Know My Name and how it worked as an antecedent of the Bond theme.

One of the worst situations with the music was in Tomorrow Never Dies, because David Arnold obviously planned his score around the theme tune he expected to be used, Surrender, rather than the Sheryl Crow theme that is actually used.

I liked what David Arnold did but I thought by the time Quantum of Solace came round his music was sounding tired and lacking in ideas. I was happy there was a change for Skyfall.

while i do agree, but still the use of music in skyfall felt a bit not of a bond film, but rather a normal thriller under the name of 007, if u know what i mean, i do prefer the music used in the pierce brosnan movies, disregarding the fact that casino royale is a reboot, and james bond didn t get his 007 status yet

I liked that sense of intrigue about the Skyfall score – there were some fantastic parts in it. I said elsewhere that it reminded me of Vangelis's Blade Runner soundtrack at times.

I love all films with Bond. Soundtrack is one love.
