American Directors that do well outside the US

I am thinking of American directors who are as successful or perhaps more successful in regions outside the US as they are in the US. I have heard that David Lynch has a significant audience in Europe, especially France. I wonder if film makers like Jarmusch would play well in Europe. Other than that I am looking for American directors I have not heard of, or who I might need to give a second shot.I am all ears.

You probably find its true for quite a few American directors at the artier end, Kubrick's Barry Lyndon for example was much better received in mainland Europe. Hard to find details off hand but I could imagine someone like John Cassavetes being well regarded as well.
