It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard ya hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!” ~ Rocky Balboa

Hmmm, seems as if 'A Star is Born' really is winning best picture.

There's been a distinct underdog feeling to many recent winners, or at least a lack of long-held frontrunner status. It used to be that the frontrunner won handily and regularly, but obviously times have changed. Which is why I was initially betting on 'The Favourite' to pull off a surprise win; Searchlight, period piece, indie director finally garnering renegotiation, the female-driven narrative, etc. But it seems as if here, where it should've been nominated rather easily, it's apparently forgotten. Then again, The Shape of Water wasn't nominated for ensemble, and we all know how that turned out. However, I don't see a scenario where The Favourite will lead the nominations.

I feel trend this year is to recognize more populist works. This makes sense with the zeitgeist as well; people being so constantly bombarded by the mess happening in politics that they want to have more fun when they sit down to watch a movie. Democrats did well in the mid-terms, Trump is losing power, people have spent the past 2 years in outrage, and I think it's now it's time for some respite.

Cooper's film is classic melodramatic escapism that would ideally pander to their liking.

Welcome to the human race...
Wonder how many people got snubbed just so Emily Blunt could get nominated twice.

Love Emily Blunt, so I'm okay with that. I'm more annoyed that Malek got nominated for his terrible Mercury performance.

Welcome to the human race...
I'm surprised that it got a "best cast" nomination since Malek is the only one that seems to get singled out when anyone talks about it (then again it's the only nomination I haven't seen so far so who knows).

Yeah, this now strikes me as an undeserved nomination. Myers alone should've disqualified it.

Very surprised that Blunt took out Supporting Actress (even after considering how season favourite Regina King wasn't even nominated), but it was still kinda cool to see Black Panther win Best Cast.
