Man and his daughter/niece tv series in the 1970s or 80s in the USA

Back in the 1970s or 80s there was this tv series about a man accompanied by his daughter/niece who would go around America (rural or urban I can't remember) and have adventures. The events portrayed were I think in the 1930s or 40s.

Are you sure that it was a girl that he traveled with, and not a boy?

There was a TV show that ran from 1982-1983 called "Voyagers!". It starred Jon-Erik Hexum and Meeno Peluce as time travelers that traveled through history.
