Just figured with Oscar time rolling around I was curious as to everyone's favorites that have won the prestigous awards for each decade. Obviously we all know that there are some great films that didn't even win the award that are better than the ones that have won it, but I figured we would put that aside for now.

Here's how I see it though I've only gotten through about a third of the Best Picture winners altogether:

20's- Sunrise (assuming it counts)
30's- You Can't Take it With You
40's- Casablanca
50's- On the Waterfront
60's- The Sound of Music
70's- One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
80's- Rain Man
90's- Unforgiven
00's- Million Dollar Baby

My movie knowledge starts in the 70s but I'm trying to see more older ones.

70s Taxi Driver
80s Raging Bull
90s Pulp Fiction
00s The Dark Knight

This thread is about the Oscars and none of those won Best Picture.
Duh! I should read the whole post

Well then attempt number 2:

70s- The Deer Hunter
80s- Oh man, I havn't seen any of the best pictures of 80s. Raging Bull was atlease nominated.
90s- Schindler's List
00s- No Country For Old Men

I'll have to abstain on the 1920s since I haven't seen the two Oscar winners, Wings and The Broadway Melody.

From that period on, my choices ould be:

Gone With the Wind (1930s)
Casablanca (1940s)
From Here to Eternity (1950s)
Lawrence of Arabia (1960s)
The Godfather (1970s)
Driving Miss Daisy (1980s)
Forrest Gump (1990s)
Chicago (2000s)

"Live forever or die trying"
30s Gone With The Wind
40s Casablanca
50s All About Eve
60s The Sound Of Music
70s The Godfather Part II
80s Amadeus/Platoon
90s American Beauty
00s The Departed
i gotta agree with Durden but the 00's are debaitable from because there were to many decent/good movies in that decade

Surprised to see so many people rate The Departed - I've seen it three times and I still don't rate it as an Oscar winner - am I missing something (some good performances excepted)- or was it just a bad year for movies that year?

Well, the conventional wisdom is that it was more of a Lifetime Achievement Award to make up for the fact that the Academy failed to reward Martin Scorsese for Goodfellas. I thought The Departed was very, very entertaining the first time I saw it, and I've probably seen it about a half-dozen times since, and I'm stunned by how well it holds up. I sort of regarded it as the voters throwing Scorsese a bone at first, as most others did, but I feel that way a bit less now. It's an awfully good film.

And yeah, I do think it was kind of a weak year; the other nominees were The Queen, Little Miss Sunshine, Babel, and Letters from Iwo Jima. No huge standout, really.

I think The Queen is the standout from the list. Better than The King`s Speech to, though those two films about the changing status of royalty in the mass media age would make an excellent double bill. The Departed is pretty good, not close to Scorsese`s best works but better than a good number of Oscar winners from the preceding 25 years (and IMO the end of that really shaky run from the Academy- since 1979 most of the winners had been really undistinguished, but all four most recent starting with The Departed have been good).
