Who watched it? Like every year its classic viewing - an hour & a half of dodgy singing acts followed by an hour & a half of suspect voting between neighbouring countries.

ok so here's the vote for Eurovision song contest 2003 from Miss Parker:

1 point Germany [the 'let's get happy' song very much the eurovision type song]
2 points Ireland [catchy enough, cute singer with 3 unbelieveably attractive back up singers]
3 points Turkey [Very good opening tune followed by some harsh singing...she was just going too high - but not a bad number to win]
4 points Spain [good lead singer with a pretty professional outift]
5 points Malta ['to dream again' a very corny song but a good singer]
6 points Romania [the one with the big discs...not quite sure what all that was but the gal had a pretty powerful voice & the tune was catchy...I could actually see that song doing the nightclubs here]
7 points Greece [first the horrid leather corset which showed most of her boobs distracted my attention but once I looked away & heard the song I noticed it was quite good - the lead singer had a great voice....& a huge improvement from last years Greek entry (the robot guys )...disappointed with how little votes it got]
8 points Belgium [bummer it didn't win - the Slovenian vote screwed it right at the end. This song grew on me, the hand movements in particular were cool as was the "made up" language they were singing...the instrumental part was excellent]
10 points France [very underrated it hardly got any votes but the French singer was not only beautiful but a fabulous singer with a good song]
12 points Estonia [these guys sounded like a band u might find at your local bar that were waiting for their big break that's never come. Their song was "80's coming back" - it was totally tradgic but oh so great. This was one of the few songs I'd like to hear again .....like most of my picks they faired pretty poorly in the votes ]

Noteworthy mentions:
>>Austria - oh lordy how friggin terrible were they!!!!! I cannot believe they got so many votes...they came 6th which is crazy? The act was by a comedian & literally looked & sounded like Play School on crack! The guy jumped around like a freak & couldn't sing to save himself - the back up gals were terrible & there in the background were cardboard cutouts of animals playing instruments which was just weird.
>>Russia - with TATU whom sounded crap...their vocals were painful, their harmony was all over the place but their actual act & stage presence was quite good - that's about all they had going for them.
>> Norway - the gorgeous preschool teacher whom did the slow song at the piano & tried oh so hard [& successfully so] to look cute but he couldn't sing...maybe in a preschool class he sounds pretty good but not representing a country!
>>Latvia - & their song "Hello From Mars" Now you know with a title like that its gonna stink even before they start singing......& it did. What a shame for the host country.
>>UK - not picking up a single vote...how embarrassing! And their song "Cry Baby" was suppose to have been a hit in the UK - I cannot see how ....cos it stunk!
>>& of course Ukraine - with their song "Hasta La Vista Baby" an instant classic what a shocker & to top it off they had a gymnast on stage for some bizarre reason.

You watch that in Australia??? Of course i watched it too - it is an enormous thing here in Sweden and in a lot of the other european countries as well.

I wrote down the ones during the "sing through" that I thought had a chance on the top 5:

Iceland
Turkey
Russia
Spain
Belgium
Romania
Sweden

and with Poland as an outsider.

And since the result was:

1. Turkey
2. Belgium
3. Russia
4. Norway
5. Sweden

you have to agree that I did a pretty good job, eh?

I really thought the russian contribution was disgraceful but I knew that they would get a lot of votes since they are famous and "scandalous".

The polish contribution. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. So hyper-pretentious. But sometimes that works. "KEINE GRÄNSE!!! KEINE FAHNE!!!"

You're right, the estonian song was actually pretty high class. But I never thought it would stand a chance in this contest.

I would like to shoot the austrian guy... Write a real song, damnit!

They contribution that made me laugh hardest was the one from Cyprus. It was like the biggest cliché ever. The lyrics and the melody were both so mediocre and unoriginal and his accent was funny. But did you see the way he kept time with his feet when he sang?? Hilarious.

It's always fun to watch what the hell people are wearing on this thing and let me just say that this year was a great year. The shoe fashion nowadays.. my god... The longer the better seems to be the motto. The boots the swedish guy had on were unbelievable.

And zero points to Great Britain. Serves them right... That song was hideous. At first I thought "are they really hearing the music they are singing to?" but then I realized it was probably meant to sound out of key.

And Ireland... this eurovision superpower.. What a surprisingly weak contribution.

One thing that pisses me off is that the music wasn't performed live, only the singing.

Hmmm.... I just realized... I'm a nerd.

Eurovision is very popular here - you could see a few aussies in the Eurovision audience, I saw a blow up kangaroo at one point. I watch it every year - it makes for a top night of bitching & laughing & paying out on all the acts

Yep pretty impressive guessing there. What's with Norway coming 4th? He couldn't sing! & Sweden well they weren't bad but Estonia & France were better but faired far worse in the results.

oh yes Poland were a shocker. An incredibly bad mal singer paired with a beautiful fantastic female singer - what's the go there?

The Cyprus guy was tagged Billy Ray Cyprus by our aussie commentator & he wasn't far off. I too noticed his poor stage presence - he looked like he didn't know how to keep time. He's a footballer whose not meant for pop music!

Your're right this year was a great year all round. The singers seemed to be even more beautiful this year - Spain, France, Bosnia, Iceland, Sweden, Poland (gal), Norway, Ireland, Netherlands, Croatia, Portugal, Slovenia, Latvia, Malta & the UK all had gorgeous lead singers. The fashion if the Netherlands stood out with their loud colours & their fuller figured back up singer in bright pink. Germany was another with wild colours.

And yeh the taped music was too loud & kinda dodgy....on several occassions you couldn't hear the singers.

I just think it's more interesting and real when they actually play on the instruments they bring on stage.

The contendors have began to focus much more on appearance and looks, yes. It's because it is now the tv-audience who votes, not juries like in the past (except for Russia who still has a jury). I noticed that female lead singers were totally in majority and almost every one of them was very beautiful and had pretty revealing clothes. Traditionally the juries didn't even get to see the performers before they decided their votes. I think a lot of the reason to Turkey's win was their cool show, the sexy bellydancing.

Lets put a smile on that block

I didnt get a chance to watch the eurovision song contest. its not normally a big thing over here unless we know that we have a good song. So obviosuly this years wasnt. And trust me it was definatly not a hit over here. I havnt even heard this years song, i dont think hardly anyone has. What normally happens is the act that we have represnting the UK normally has loads of publicity, like Gina G a few years back, but that only happens when the song is remotley good. From what ive heard, this years song wasnt anywhere near remotely....not even a little bit good.

ah ok our aussie commentator must have gotten that wrong about the UK song being a hit. I'd like to hear the song in tune before I totally dismiss it as rubbish - that s if there is an in tune version
