Someone recommend me an emotionally devastating arthouse film, please.

You already have one in your favorite film list - Seventeen Years (1999), one of the most impressive Chinese films.

Check out the Japanese short documentary Children Full of Life (2003) and Lee Joon-Ik's Hope (2013).

Perhaps a good subversive Western like Johnny Guitar. I've not been impressed by most of them. I've already seen a few decent ones like Winchester '73, Canyon Passage, Bad Day at Black Rock and Dead Man.
