Polish Corner

Sorry if I'm rude but I'm right
Given the warm reception of East Asian Corner, me and @Ms. M decided to create a Polish corner here. Contrary to what you might think, we won't use it as a dating site, and we won't speak Polish here (okay, not predominantly)..

All people who are not from Poland are more than welcome here. You can ask questions, or tell us what you know about Poland (apart from the fact that there is one superb gal, and one amazing dude that live there).

Look, I'm not judging you - after all, I'm posting here myself, but maybe, just maybe, if you spent less time here and more time watching films, maybe, and I stress, maybe your taste would be of some value. Just a thought, ya know.

Damn and blast .

The things I'm thinking of immediately are all film or TV related. For instance I know Juliette Binoche is half-Polish – information I probably recall from watching the Three Colours trilogy. I also remember listening to Krzysztof Kieślowski and thinking how distinctive and unusual Polish sounded.

Another half-Polish actress I like is Stella Gonet. Let's face it, most people I like are half-something .

I didn't know that! I like her.
Yes me too.

What do you mean by this exactly?
Well at the time, which is probably about 15 years ago let's say, it didn't sound like any language I'd heard and I've just remembered how rapid it sounded too, so the effect was interesting, exotic. Since then I've heard Icelandic and responded similarly.

Hopefully not half-witted. :P
If they are they're hiding it well .

All is cool. Thanks for understanding.

some knowledge about poland to those who don't know---

poland lost nearly one fourth of it's population in the second world war and was the worst sufferer of the war .

poland is now a full white christian catholic country---the dream of any white supremacist .

there were many jews before the second world war . but were massacred by the germans in the holocaust . when the remaining tried to come back after the war , the poles themselves opposed their coming back , thereby showing their own bigotry .

poland has so far resisted pressure to accept middle eastern immigrants .

in the medieval era , poland was a great power . its greatest king was Jan Sobieski , who saved europe from the turks by defeating them in a great battle outside vienna the capital of austria .

but as poland grew weak , the three powers ( prussia , austria and russia ) divided it and it was extinguished . when the division of poland was announced , the queen of austria cried . this prompted the king of prussia to say '' she cries but takes all the same !! '' . the poles themselves said '' we have only two allies---God and France , but both are too far away to be of any help !! ''

poland was reestablished after the first world war . in the second world war , they challenged a division of german armoured tanks with horse drawn cavalry . needless to say , the poles have the reputation of being a foolhardy people....

My Polish banker - I met him several years back (and he has since moved on), but on first meeting I heard his accent. I took a stab at identifying it as Polish. I told him it's always risky trying to guess an accent (if you get it wrong, you may insult the person).

Then we got to my last name. I said I hoped he wouldn't hold my German heritage against me (and that my uncles & grandfathers fought for America against the Nazis). He laughed and said, "As long as you don't tell me you're Russian. We hate the Russians. The Nazis were nothing compared to the Russians! Do you know what the Russians did to the Poles?"
After a short history discussion I asked him if he'd ever seen the movie Defiance (2008) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1034303/?ref_=nv_sr_2
He had not, so I turned him on to it!

I know, right? Ethnic minorities are very scarce. Except for Ukrainians. Various sources claim there is from 1.5 to 3 million of them in Poland right now. Allegedly every 10th citizen of Wrocław (Breslau) is Ukrainian.
when the remaining tried to come back after the war , the poles themselves opposed their coming back , thereby showing their own bigotry .
Yeah, Communist government's argument was that you can only have one motherland you love, and it's impossible for Jews to have both socialist Poland and imperialist Israel, so they "encouraged" Jews to go to Israel.
in the medieval era , poland was a great power
Not quite medieval (so aren't the times of Sobieski), but Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth in 16th and 17th century was said to be the most tolerant country in Europe, inhabited by people of many nationalities, ethnicities, and religions. Quite amazing considering the witch trials and various persecutions taking place in Western and Northern Europe at the time.
we have only two allies---God and France , but both are too far away to be of any help !! ''
Same happened at the beginning of the Second World War. Poland signed a treaty with Great Britain (Anglo-Polish military alliance) that said in case of German invasion on either of the countries, the other country will provide millitary help. Needless to say, Great Britain did nothing when Poland was invaded.
poland was reestablished after the first world war
And became a Communist country for the next 50 years. Communists would hunt and execute former Resistance (Armia Krajowa) fighters as well.
in the second world war , they challenged a division of german armoured tanks with horse drawn cavalry
This is a myth conceived by German propaganda and spread even further by post-war Communist government of Poland. Goebbels aimed to portray Poland as technically inferior to the point they had to charge German tanks. Even the worst commander would know that a cavalry charge is simply uneffective towards armored vehicles. They used cavalry to charge ambushed, unexpecting camping infantry, or to distract the enemy, and mainly as means of transport, and also during rallies and holidays using as representative means. Communist government would repeat this myth to falsely portray pre-war imperialist Poland as obsolete and backwards, so that they had an excuse to try and make it more modern. And for them the only way to do this was making it a Communist satelite country of USSR. The myth was spread by movies, too. In Andrzej Wajda's Lotna there is a scene of Polish cavalry charging tanks. In the book the movie was based on, however, the Polish cavalry charges an enemy camp.
"As long as you don't tell me you're Russian. We hate the Russians.
Some Poles hate both, but I'm actually not surprised Russians are hated more. Second World War ended in 1945. Poland stopped being a Communist country merely 30 years ago.
He had not, so I turned him on to it!
This sounds pretty kinky without the last two words.
hmm so you are dating each other?

its ok.. its all good.
We're not, but you got pretty jealous. Didn't you? :P
