I'm also mostly self-taught (been typing since age 10 when I got my first typewriter), but I also took Typing in ninth grade and had to learn better positioning of hands on the keyboard. Wish we'd had Mavis Beacon when I was first learning (the software, not the guinea pig).
At my British prep school we weren’t taught useful stuff like typing. My hands aren’t properly positioned on the keyboard as I didn’t know that stuff, but it never hindered me.

I took a typing class in high school and a computer class (the computer language BASIC) the same year. I had the same teacher for both classes.

I typed perfectly in the typing class, but when I typed in the computer class, I typed with the two finger, hunt-and-peck method. (I found that having my hands in the proper position on the keyboard was comfortable on a normal typewriter, but not comfortable on a computer keyboard.)

I typed just as fast (if not faster) using the hunt-and-peck method, and I was just as accurate, but it annoyed my teacher because he knew that I could type properly if I wanted to, but he couldn't lower my grade in the computer class because I didn't type with my hands in the proper positions.

Oops, everyone! Sorry my little furry potato, Mavis, kinda took over this thread accidentally. She sincerely apologizes and won't let it happen again if you send kale and leaf lettuce ASAP.

It’s nice you have Mavis. A friend of mine when picking up her kid from daycare one day saw 2 little guinea pigs in their crate. They looked so deprived to her so she asked if she could take them home. She did & she cared for them beautifully.

That's fabulous!

Mavis and I sat in her playpen just now. She dashed around my feet and legs and wasn't quite sure what she thought of it, but she's really good about me holding her and giving her scritches, etc. Hard to believe she's been here only five days. She's much friendlier than many of my previous pigs were. I'd forgotten, though, how that timothy hay gets ALL over the place.
