Welcome one & all!

It's that time of the year again so let me present you with the 8th annual film challenge! Starting this year, the challenge will be ever so slightly easier since the number of films needed to complete it has been reduced by 10, to 152 in total. We will also be starting a new, recurring subsection of the Main Challenge, dedicated to the cinema of specific countries. You can find our first iteration in section J. Please let me know if any clarifications are necessary or if you see any mistakes and they will be addressed promptly. Also kindly note the last bullet point, in case you wish to make it easier to follow each other's progress.

Main Challenge

Nightmare Mode

Important Notes:
  • The challenge officially starts on January 1st 2025, so start updating your lists with films you watch after that date.
  • How you count films is up to you. This is not a contest and it is up to each and every one to decide how they want to do this. I would suggest going for one category per film either in the main challenge or in nightmare mode, preferably films you watched for the first time this year, but that's just me.
  • In order for everyone to be able to effortlessly scroll down the page, I would suggest wrapping your updates in collapsible text, like in this post.
  • One of the Nightmare Mode challenges includes 10 films suggested by other participants, so please send me at least 10 suggestions each, in order to create a healthy and diverse pool of films for everyone to draw from.
  • If you wish to keep one post which you will be updating throughout the year, you can let me know and I will link it below so we can have every list in one place to be able to track each other's progress.
Have fun watching films this year!

You did it again.

John Waters is alive and well. And still dropping top ten lists on Vulture.

It's the only person who was living among the dead people category.

It's tradition at this point.Thank you for catching it! It will be edited soon.

I like the idea of sticking to just one post this year and keeping things updated on it.

I got a tentative plan for the year, but will wait until after the 1st to start posting my picks for categories. With the great streaming reset of 2025 coming, any plans will have to wait on those.

Women will be your undoing, Pépé
Ahh, that beautiful thrill of a coming new year and another of Jabs' Challenges revealed. YAY
While I usually do quite dismal with not one single completed section, this past year was an extraordinary breakthrough with five completed sections to the Main Challenge, and along with the curious anticipation and welcomed panic of attempting said challenge, there is an additional thrill of perhaps achieving even more.
So, I'll be perusing past Challenges for possible early admissions and for a Recommendation List, which I'll add in a separate post.

Just when you think you got a grip on cinema, I see @Wyldesyde19 attempting genres I need to google to know what they are....
@TriggerFalcon will you be joining us this year? If the size is overwhelming, you can opt for just the normal mode which is designed to entail one movie a week.

Yeah, I’ve always tried to do very spacific genres. Giallo one year. Kaiju another time. Samurai last year.
Wuxia is interesting because it gives me a chance to dig into some King Hu films. It’s pretty distinct from martial arts films.
I’ve already chosen the ten films I’ll be watching and I’ll probably get them out of the way first.

I'm happy to see you've moved away from the foreign language heavy lists of previous years. It's frankly to hard to track down and watch dozens of them for specific categories. Just doing Italy is going to make this list doable for me this year.

I just realized that nightmare mode only has 10 categories instead of the usual 11. Was something left out by mistake or did you decide to ease it back some this year?

I think I may have settled on Sven Nykvist as my cinematographer for this. I did Gunnar Bjornstrand for actor last year so I will manage to knock off 20 Bergman films without even using him as my director of choice.
