I guess it depends on whether you want to see/add films that are 'The Good and The Great' or films that'll become much loved, personal favourites. Those two aren't mutually exclusive, but I think it depends on how and why you watch films.

Anyway, as a member of the fairer sex, I'd recommend getting whichever of these you don't already own.

Grease
Dirty Dancing
Pretty Woman
Mama Mia!

Ok so I bought, well had bought for me;

American History X
Bride Wars (Cause I really wanted to see it )
Grease
Indiana Jones the Quadrilogy
Little Miss Sunshine

Im going to buy more that was suggested but unfortunately the Back Cat in HMV and Head was pretty lame beyond belief! Good old Amazon will have the answer.

Ugh... the only one of those I can stomach is Dirty Dancing... and even then, only when I'm in the mood... which is not often anymore...

+rep for Breakfast At Tiffany's. Have you watched Bride Wars yet DA? I've got it sat on the shelf, but I've not gotten around to watching it yet.

OMG! You don't own any of the 'Girly Four"?!?!

Do you know how rare you are in the whole of the Western world?

LOL.... I actually think I used to own a copy of Grease that someone gave me as a gift... I don't remember seeing it since Katrina hit though... but as I recall, it had never been opened...

Welcome to the human race...
The idea of a Girly Four makes me wonder what the Manly Four are...whatever they are, I probably own one of them tops.

Yes ive watched Bride Wars, ok, if I were being completely honest its a bit naff, I wouldnt rate it at all. But, I love chick flicks and think its amazing ^_^ Though I have a tendancy to love rubbish movies.

The Godfather would have to be in it. Maybe Goodfellas? Casino?

Welcome to the human race...
Not really, probably something a little more action-oriented...I always thought Predator was a good contender for one of the manliest movies ever made, along with RoboCop or 300 or the Rambo series, along with Glengarry Glen Ross if you wanted something more cerebral but no less tough.

Action doesnt really make it man orientated though IMO. Im still saying The Godfather would automatically have to be in it.

I'd think Die Hard, T2, The Great Escape and Rocky could be a "Manly Four".

Like the fella says, in Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock."

Romance doesn't really make a movie female-oriented, but it certainly helps a lot.

Plus, The Godfather is a more universally-acclaimed classic that most members of both sexes enjoy more or less equally.

Seriously? I don't own any of those either. My mum has them all, I think...

I really, really don't see the appeal of Dirty Dancing at all, although the other three are alright in a cheesy kind of way. Surprised you didn't include Ghost on that list, there's another supposedly great romantic chickflick that I can't stand.

Anyway, to respond to the original post, some essential dvd must-haves (probably repeats, but the more people rec them, the stronger the rec, right?). Gender neutral, entirely subjective and slightly Brit-biased cos you mentioned hmv and head...

Leon
The Godfather I and II
Star Wars Trilogy
Bladerunner
Brief Encounter
Casablanca
Fight Club
Citizen Kane
The Third Man
Lawrence of Arabia
Pulp Ficton
Reservoir Dogs
Alien Quadrilogy
City of God
Downfall
Four Weddings and a Funeral
Monty Python's Life of Brian
Withnail and I
Schindler's List
The Crying Game
Trainspotting

Holy crap! There's two of you?!?

Actually, Ghost was part of the Girly Four until Mamma Mia! came out (as it were) and, since then, I keep forgetting about it but still calling this group The Girly Four. So, really, it's a Girly Five now. Thanks for reminding me TN. It must be a subconscious thing, I'd do anything to forget Ghost, what with Satan winning her Oscar and everything. *shudder*
