What's the definition of a "horror" movie?

You say that Silence of the Lambs does not count cause it has no jump scares. Since when does a horror movie need jump scares to count? Is that a rule?

Plus I think that the music in Silence of the Lambs does count as horror movie music. It's done by the same composer who did The Fly, which is a horror movie, and it's done in the style of music. Sounds like horror movie music to me.

Jump scares shouldn’t be a prerequisite. The fellowship of the ring has jump scares..is that a horror? It also does have eerie music. Pretty understandable the debate. It’s not black and white. Silence is a multifaceted film.

A horror movie has to have these elements to be a classified as a horror thriller:
Ghosts
Jump scares
An unrealistic villain, spirit, etc
Supernatural things happening with eerie and scary music
Psycho,The others,Dead silence, annabelle, conjuring,the vvitch, it, all of these contain the elements above therefore qualify as horror thrillers, means the main genre of horror movies

What ghost is in psycho? He doesn’t see a ghost or anything supernatural he’s just a plain psycho.

It s multifacated to u, but it qualifies as a crime thriller, i has no scary music, it has no haunted stuff etc...

You’ve mixed up horror with a ghost story.

Although there are many horror movies that don't have any of those; The Last House on the Left for example.

He even gave an example of psycho which has no supernatural elements. Unfortunately rambond is confused.

Think we are going to go with linguistics for a basic understanding. Consult the dictionary. Horror -‘ an intense feeling of fear, shock, or disgust.’

Then film....speaks for itself.

Then maybe add in the sub genres like slasher, gore porn, monster, supernatural.

I don’t have any expertise. The whole thread is about exploring the definition of a horror movie. It’s complicated. Personally I think Jurassic Park is and so is silence. You’ve only said those movies are not but haven’t been able to explain your reasoning.

totally out of place and wrong, jurassic park is an adventure film, it is not about scaring you it is about telling u a story about dinosaurs, if u find that a couple of scenes scared u when the dinosaur is chasing the children around the facility, it can happen but it doesn t mean it s a horror thriller , so does silence of the lambs, it s clearly a crime thriller, based on a serial killer that the police is trying to find out who it is. it goes in the same boat as for example: the bone collector, and zodiac, same plot , same kind of story and execution

now you can make up your mind on how this list was chosen, just look at the plot and premise of both lists and you will see the difference between these films
