Inception and The Killer Inside Me are the only two films listed here so far that I'd even want to see. Toy Story may be good, but it doesn't really interested me and there's just not anything else.

In order of preference as well:

1. Inception
2. Shutter Island
3. The Ghost Writer
4. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
5. Toy Story 3
Huge cutoff in quality here
6. IMAX: Hubble 3D
7. Iron Man 2
8. Green Zone
9. Salt
10. Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief
11. The Sorcerer's Apprentice

That top 5 is really strong.

I don't see how everyone's ranking Inception above Shutter Island. Inception was an ugly, rambling mess compared to SI's air-tight film-making.

Because a film is more than just its technical mastery, of course. Shutter Island was a better made film, but far more predictable, and far less audacious. It hit its target dead center, but the target was a hell of a lot closer.

Yes. You are right. Nevertheless, I can't reward points to Inception just because it's a mainstream film that is a little brainier than regular mainstream films. Whenever I hear someone like it IRL, it's always lumped alongside Fight Club and, even more recently, Scott Pilgrim. It's not some huge groundbreaking accomplishment that merits beating Shutter Island "as a film". Sorry, but there have been better mindf*cks. Plus, I technically enjoyed SI more because of the lack of facepalms. "Jesus Christ" case in point.

Sure, it depends on what you value. At this point I value smart, intricate, audacious screenplays and grand setpieces over shot composition and the like. It probably doesn't help that I predicted the end of Shutter Island while watching the trailer for the first time, either. If it were even a little unpredictable, I'd have liked it a lot more.

But look, we both know the deal: any smart mainstream film is going to happen to come out at the same time that any number of teenage guys are just starting to take films seriously, and it'll therefore blow their minds to smithereens (which is a word we need to use more, by the by). I wouldn't grant it points for this, but I wouldn't take any away, either.

i don't know that i'd say shutter island was a tighter film overall than inception. i'd have to see shutter island again. but i definitely wouldn't characterize inception as an ugly rambling mess. not that i'd have a problem if it was a rambling mess (keep in mind The Blade is one of my all time faves)

anywho my list thus far with the ratings I give to these movies:

Inception A
Shutter Island B+
How to Train Your Dragon B
Iron Man 2 B
Ghost Writer B-
The Killer Inside Me B-
Toy Story 3 C+
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo C+
Robin Hood C
Get Him to the Greek C

It'll probably be a couple years before I've accumulated 10 'A' and 'B' movies.

You sure are generous. Over a third of the flicks you've seen from this year get an "A".

Ha, no this is about a quarter of the films I've seen this year. I don't think enough people would know the others well enough to care about my rating of them. And I think all those movies deserve A's. It's September, if I hadn't seen at least ten movies by now that I would award 3.5 stars or more, this would be a sad year in Hollywood.
