In 1900, a bourgeoisie woman comes back to her husband's house few days after she run away with another man. They discuss in sad terms their marriage and some flashbacks show the receptions they used to give. That's an opportunity to show the codes of the time: somebody leaves their living room in the middle of the evening and explains he is going to a more prominent house, a place "where they will never be invited", they often said that this or that person is "a man of the world", etc.
