Do You Like Movies That Explore Things You Wouldn't, But Think About?

Voyeuristic stuff, for example. I'm a curious guy, but I'd never screw with someone's privacy, so watching it in a movie gets my "fix".

Or someone wanting to rob a bank and live a luxurious life, but who either didn't have the guts to do it, or having the knowledge that you're going to get caught, and thus, a vicarious thrill by watching movies like them.

I have a lot of vicarious lives in the movies. In real life, I avoid gunfights, bar brawls, entering creepy bat-ridden castles, having affairs with wives of gangsters, and high-speed chases with police in crowded cities, especially if I have to drive under an elevated train, or cross a drawbridge that's opening.

Vicarious thrills are about half of the reason I see movies. I also adore stunt performers but I'm glad I never took that up as a trade.

The plot and dialogue?

Funny you should say that. I only tend to watch porn with plots (not kidding). And you know how people crib about a bad movie by saying 'I have seen porn with better storylines.' Well I have. One even based on a true story.

On a side note, I am currently watching The Hannibal series, and I was reminded of this thread during it. Cause I do tend to enjoy serial killer movies and series just a tad bit more.

This is the most cinephile thing I've read today.

A: So what sort of porn are you into?

B: I am into porn with good plot development.

My Darth Star is in for a service
Oh the days before the internet when we made do with magazines that had pages stuck together and the pirate video guy with films from Germany where the women had more hair on their foo foo than Chewbacca has on his back.

That's a nice way to put it. Though in reality it's more to do with finding the events leading up to the sex hotter (and this is where the plot becomes important), than the actual act of sex, which let's be honest we all fast forward (or at least I do).

And what about certain unique characters... For example, some actors become the character, and it might be hard for some to transition back.

I do remember reading years ago that Dustin Hoffman had a hard time leaving Raymond at the studio when he was making Rain Man. You can kind of see a little bit of it during his Oscar acceptance speech for the movie.

And I recall what Olivier is reputed to have said to Hoffman,“why don’t you just try acting?”

I also heard that those two didn't get along at all during the filming of Marathon Man

I think it would probably be very annoying to be on set with a deeply committed method actor (e.g., must call them their character's name at all time, they "stay in character" and do weird anti-social crap, refusal to have simple civil interactions).

Daniel Day Lewis is a good example of this kind of method actor. I think one would have to respect his M.O. if one were a fellow actor on the set.

Mr. Lewis is one the few to whom I would accord such a pass (not praising it, but tolerating it). I would not, however, blame anyone for smacking the **** out of Jared Leto for sending them a dead rat as "the Joker."

Method bull**** is largely bull****. Kurt Russell rustled more than a few jimmies a few years back when he said that acting isn't as hard as everyone makes it out to me -- You memorize your lines and you hit your marks.

This Passion-of-the-Christ body transformation nonsense that actors have embraced so as clutch at dangling Oscars (e.g., Deniro Raging Bull, Bale The Mechanic, Matthew McConaughey Dallas Buyer's Club) is a downstream consequence of the cult of authenticity and fully inhabiting a role. It's dangerous, but the cult persists. The actor must magically transcend pretending and really "become" the subject in order for it to be true acting. It's nonsense, it's self-indulgent, it's dangerous.

And with respect to Mr. Lewis, he sounds a bit crazy, sending Sally Field text messages as Abraham Lincoln and leaving the stage (as in stage acting entirely) after collapsing back stage at a production of Hamlet where he hallucinated seeing his father.

But we want the mythology. We want the Oracle at Delphi to inhale the fumes and to convulse and chatter as we seek substance outside of our everyday experience. If they can be conveyed by the spirits, then maybe so can we? Well, no we can't. It's nonsense and actors should not be encouraged to embrace insanity as a badge of authenticity and talent. Say your lines and hit your marks.

Well, I wouldn't f**k a chick in her eye socket but I watch it in film often enough. Curious what it feels like though.

lol.... Many years ago, our MANAGER told us of a story like this... Ouch!
