Careful, man. There's a beverage here!
You have to watch Willow if you haven't already. It's the OG LOTR!

Also, check out Valhalla Rising if you are into the medieval and fantasy. It's a more independent type movie (it's a bit slow and there's not much of a soundtrack) but it is beautifully shot and the fight scenes are pretty awesome. Also, you can't go wrong with Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale).

Except that it isn't, since it came out decades after the source novels were written and almost a full decade after the first film version of LotR. It's also more of a comedy in a lot of ways, some of it unintentional. I find Willow to be overlong and insipid, personally, and I have ever since it came out.

Meanwhile - I second the recommendation for Excalibur!

Sorry for not clarifying. I did not mean that the source material for Willow was earlier than LOTR. Believe me, I have read all of the books times than I can count. I only meant that it is as close to an old school version of LOTR films as you can get. Matter of fact, I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Lucas took some "inspiration" from the Tolkien books. I did actually like Willow for the use of the dwarves and for Mad Martigan, but each to his own. Thanks for the correction!
