Movies based on Toys

First of all, I must say that I am in no way a culture snob.
I would probably be bored to tears if I had to watch for example Soviet cinema or pretentious French erotic films.

However the huge financial success of certain movies such as Transformers or GI JOE still continues to baffle me.

We are not talking about respected and complex art forms such as Anime or Graphic Novels.

What we have here are bland works initially conceived as entertainment for small children.
Not young adults, not teenagers, but children.

The character development is virtually nonexistent (me good, you bad) and the plot is sub-par even for pornographic standards.
Most of the time on screen we are shown several stereotypical situations that lead to a series of random explosions….and that’s basically it.
I’m pretty sure that it all makes sense when you’re 8 years old, but why would mature audiences be interested is a bit of a mystery to me.

Well, these movies are not about plot, instead they are about showing a huge amount of special effects and explosions and stuff like that. The plot is standardized so that people are already used to the plot, since it is the same all over again, and can concentrate their attention on the explosions.

Also, these movies are produced from a global market: only 30% of the revenues of Transformers 3 came from the US, so the plot needs to be very simple in order to not disappoint all the different national cultures. It is not a decent way of treating our audience, instead it shows that the filmmakers scorn their audiences.

And the fact that the Transformer movies are based on toys from the 1980's probably has something to do with childhood nostalgia and maybe because the toy design look good as well.

I also note that there are similarities between modern blockbuster movies without decent plots and art films that don't focus on plot: both Transformers 3 and Tarkovsky's The Mirror don't focus on the plot, instead the focus is on the experience and situation. The difference between the two is that The Mirror tries to be a beautiful work of art that reaches for the sublime while Transformers 3 tries to engage the most primitive parts of the human mind.

Have you seen the Transformer movies? I haven't seen G.I.Joe, but I believe there is a back story to that also. There's a whole story behind Transformers which is pretty neat and cool.

Also, most of these things were child's toys, when the 30 year olds today were kids. So it brings back memories and nostalgia in a way they can be entertained now, by an action movie.

Still, the original Transformer movie (the one with Orson Welles) possess the greatest animated sequence in the history of english speaking animation, looking much better than those CGI robots of the recent movies.

Regarding Story vs Plot:
