Books and Documentaries on Woody Allen

Tools

I am a big Woody Allen fan. I am collecting as many of his films that I can get my hands on and I own a few of his books also. i would like to expand my interest to secondary sources on Woody and his work. I am therefore starting this thread for people to suggest good books, documentaries, journals, magazine, and newspaper articles of interest on Woody's work. I own 44 of his movies and have watched all of them multiple times. I am not altogether uncritical of Woody's personal life and several of his films which I do not think measure up to his talent. That is the source of my interest in starting this thread
If you suggest a book please provide the author, the title, the publisher and the date if possible along with a sentence or two why you are recommending the book. If you want to praise or bash Woody along the way, be my guest. Just don't spoil the books you recommend. I am going to post a list of Woody films in a separate post to give everybody a frame of reference for his films as far as when they were released.

I think this is a good place to start. It is an opportunity for Woody to comment on each of his films and address any issues that are brought up in the interviews. I'm still reading it, but it will be interesting to see how Woody describes his break with Mia and the scandal that ensued.

* denotes those films I have seen.

Somebody on this site (sorry, I forget who) posted a link to their dissertation on Woody Allen. I still haven't read it yet, but it's something you should keep an eye out for. I think sometimes you should separate the man from the artist, and not worry so much about a celebrity's personal life. I mean, according to Mia Farrow, he's a pedophile, but anyone who knows how easily memories can be implanted in a child's mind (very easily!), you have to be a little skeptical when taking everything into context. So I don't worry about it.

I have a couple books of his, such as Without Feathers and The Insanity Defense, and his short writing is similar to Steve Martin's, with their absurd humor. It looks like you've seen most of his movies, but I would suggest you check out What's Up, Tiger Lily? Very funny!

i have only heard Mia's side of that whole mess, i still don't know what Woody claims or does not claim. My main interest in his biography is to see what Woody is really like in terms of his art. I have heard he is not much different than the persona he presents in his films, but I have also heard that he is a mature artist. Just trying to get a feel for his place in cinema history at this stage in the game. i really enjoy the Woody allen on Woody Allen book so far. .
