A Song For July

You can't make a rainbow without a little rain.
Something about my nom placing in the bottom few just feels more normal.
Apologies if I committed a heinous crime by placing four others below it - should I be trying to please you more by placing your noms even lower in the remaining rounds?
You should place them where you like them, but it just seems strange when people like my noms. It's kind of like being in the Twilight Zone.

You can't make a rainbow without a little rain.
I always feel bad about it. It's just that country is one of the things I really struggle with. I wish I could like it more, because it's not as if I don't have a broad taste in music. I just can't seem to get into it.

Don't feel bad about it. You're entitled to like whatever you like, and if country music just isn't your thing, then that's okay. There are a lot of songs that I don't like, but I'm not going to feel bad for placing them at the bottom of my list, and liking the type of music that I like.

If I wanted to win, I would let Hubby choose my noms. He listens to those loud, banging songs, (that I call "headache music").

1. Annihilator - Alison Hell
(A masterclass in thrash. Same goes for the album as a whole.)
It would be on my top-10 thrash albums list if I ever did something like that (along with bands like Slayer, Metallica, and Sabbat). Unfortunately, I don't much like them outside that specific album.

Round 9

1. Brotha Lynch Hung - Return of da Baby Killa
(I mentioned in the last song tournament that my journey through rap had taken a serious detour down the dark, dangerous alleyways of 90's horrorcore, and this album has been the highlight so far. Instead of cliched gold chains, give me rappers with baby entrails dangling around their neck. Brotha Lynch Hung sounds like a meth-smoking, homicidal Snoop, and the grotesque imagery -- at least on his early stuff, haven't listened to anything from him post-90's -- is shock value with substance. A torture porn version of life in the ghetto. Plus my morbid sense of humor finds this sh*t hilarious.)

2. Dr. Dre ft. Snoop Dogg - Nuthin' but a "G" Thang
(Timeless classic. Even as someone who never liked or listened to much rap growing up, this song's SoCal vibes were impossible to deny.)

3. Kanye West - Black Skinhead
(It's normally difficult for me to separate my dislike for Kanye the person -- our next President of the United States -- to appreciate Kanye the artist, but the anger and punk-like sound/approach to this song makes it easier than normal.)

4. The Knux - Bang! Bang!
(Liked it enough to listen to it twice.)

5. Prince - U Got the Look
(Far from one of my favorite Prince tracks, but it's still Prince . . .)

6. black midi - bmbmbm
(Mostly feels like a long intro or garage jam session, but the noisier it gets, the better it gets. Still want to cut out the singer's tongue. That drummer is legit.)

7. Porcupine Tree - Trains
(Not a sound that typically appeals to me, but it's impossible not to appreciate the intricacy of the music.)

8. Jim Reeves - A Letter to My Heart (Dear Heart)
(Gentleman Jim is a gangsta in his own way.)

9. Cathedral - Soul Sacrifice
(I really love the last minute of this song when the band presses down on the gas pedal. Then that solo appears just as the song's ending, and I'm like, "No, keep going!")

10. Isengard - I kamp med Kvitekrist
(Vocally, it sounds like the metal equivalent of an administrator delivering a student address, while the rest of the band is set up three miles away, but it's still admirably heavy. Just wish the music didn't sound so buried.)

11. Ylvis - The Cabin
(Saw a blurb that described this artist as the Norwegian Lonely Island, which seems apropos. The part about pissing outside made me LOL. Amusing enough for a one-time listen, but the joke gets stale well before the song is over.)

12. A Day to Remember - If It Means A Lot To You
(It doesn't.)

10. Isengard - I kamp med Kvitekrist
(Vocally, it sounds like the metal equivalent of an administrator delivering a student address, while the rest of the band is set up three miles away, but it's still admirably heavy. Just wish the music didn't sound so buried.)
At least the rest of the band doesn't complain about the treatment. Why? Well, it's a one-man project by Fenriz, the drummer of Darkthrone, who does everything here.

black midi - bmbmbm

Cathedral - Soul Sacrifice
Jim Reeves - A Letter To My Heart (Dear Heart)
