the longest road trip you have taken

New Jersey to Florida (with my cousins): took 2 days - stayed overnight in a motel in North Carolina.

I also did a week-long drive from San Jose to San Diego (I'm not sure how long it is) but it took a week because it was a fly / drive trip where we flew from NJ to CA, then drove down the west coast, stopping at major attractions each day and spent nights in hotels.

I'm pretty sure it's the trip from Vacaville, California to Kellogg, Idaho. Roughly 890 miles each way. I've done that with my parents a few times. I have extended family that live there.

That said, we did a lot of road trips when I was a kid so there might be a longer one that I forgot about.

1,805mi

Ohio to Phoenix. Drove thru Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico. On the way back thru Vegas (during the day time), Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, and Kentucky.

I remember Utah and Colorado being absolutely beautiful.

Society researcher, last seen in Medici's Florence
Sofia, Bulgaria to Florence, Italy 890 Miles for two days (575+315, stayed overnight in Ljubljana, Slovenia). Spent a week there and went back on the same road.

Sofia, Bulgaria to Prague, Czechia 805 Miles for two days (600+205, stayed overnight in Bratislava, Slovakia). Spent a week there and went back on the same road.

driving speed 80 mph (most of the time)

San Ramon, CA to Brooklyn, NY - 2,905 miles

I didn't keep track of the miles, though I can probably give a decent estimate. In 1993 I took a six-week, cross-country roadtrip from my home in Maryland and back. Been a long damn time, but the basic itinerary, not including every single stop along the way or how much time in each region...
  • Baltimore, MD to Atlanta, GA
    approx. 650 miles
  • Atlanta, GA to New Orleans, LA
    approx. 470 miles
  • New Orleans, LA to Houston, TX
    approx. 350 miles
  • Houston, TX to El Paso, TX
    approx. 750 miles
  • El Paso, TX to White Sands, NM
    approx. 100 miles
  • White Sands, NM to Phoenix, AZ
    approx. 450 miles
  • Phoenix, AZ to Los Angeles, CA
    approx. 370 miles
  • Los Angeles, CA to San Diego, CA
    approx. 120 miles
  • San Diego, CA to Santa Cruz, CA
    approx. 460 miles
  • Santa Cruz, CA to San Francisco, CA
    approx. 75 miles
  • San Francisco, CA to Portland, OR
    approx. 700 miles
  • Portland,OR to Seattle, WA
    approx. 180 miles
  • Seattle, WA to Vancouver, BC
    approx. 145 miles
  • Vancouver, BC to Calgary, AB
    approx. 600 miles
  • Calgary, AB to Moose Jaw, SK
    approx. 440 miles
  • Moose Jaw, SK to Minneapolis, MN
    approx. 760 miles
  • Minneapolis, MN to Chicago, IL
    approx. 400 miles
  • Chicago, IL to Indianapolis, IN
    approx. 180 miles
  • Indianapolis, IN to Pittsburgh, PA
    approx. 360 miles
  • Pittsburgh, PA to Baltimore, MD
    approx. 250 miles

So approximately 7,800 or so miles. In my 1990 Toyota Tercel. We camped about half the time, motels the rest. Practically lived off of Taco Bell. In some box somewhere I have some pictures from the trip. Can't recall if I have digitized many of them? That took almost exactly six weeks. There were three of us, to start: my then-girlfriend, Heather and my (still) best friend, Chris. We were driving Chris back to Santa Cruz where he lived, having recently graduated from U.C. Santa Cruz. After that it was just me and Heather the rest of the way. Wonderful trip. I wound up later living in both San Francisco and Portland, OR.

Having traveled the United Sates a lot (I have made several more cross-country trips since then, though none as long and gloriously meandering) and seen a bit of the world and I can say that Vancouver remains the pettiest city I have ever been to (only been back once, since). Driving across the Canadian Plains is the first time I saw the Northern Lights.

you beat me by 500 miles.
April 1986. I had gotten out of the Marines and drove back to NYC. (I was stationed in Southern California, San Ramon is where my grandmother lived, I stayed there for a while before heading to NY.) One of the scariest driving things I ever experienced happened during that trip. I got caught in an early spring snowstorm in Wyoming, where there are long stretches between services, and motels were full. The road was very choppy due to the snow, I thought I'd get a flat and be stranded in the middle of nowhere. Much of the time I was in between tractor-trailers and that was scary. It really, really, sucked. The trip after that was a breeze.

I have been to Chicago and Pittsburgh for sporting events. (Cubs/Blackhawks - Steeler/Penguins). Just loved the atmosphere in old Chicago Stadium.

The Adventure Starts Here!
I drove all four of my then-minor kiddos from Pittsburgh to Orlando, Florida, and back in May 1999 when I had to attend a conference there. (Our Yoda, my firstborn, was then 15 years old. His siblings were 13, 8, and 6.) We convoyed with my bosses (they're married) and their three kids of similar ages, and we stayed in huge adjoining rooms. Yoda "babysat" the kiddos in the opened double-room during the day while the three adults attended the conference. Then we all stayed a few extra days to see Disney World and MGM. For a two-day road trip each way, my four kids were great fun. (Yoda rode shotgun and handled the AAA Trip-Tyk/map as navigator.)

So, nearly 2,000 miles roundtrip.
