Week one thoughts on some of the early games I saw parts of:

steelers get six field goals and beat the falcons 18-10. neither looked great
the bills come back and the cardinals 34-28 in a shootout
the dolphins beat the jags 20-17 on a 52 yard game ending field goal
the vikings destroy the giants 28-6. another long season for the giants.
the patriots upset the bengals 16-10. the bengals looked terrible.

Tom Brady’s voice, not great.
i thought he was terrible.

Why bother having a kickoff anymore?

They need to tweak it for sure. The simplest thing would be moving the kicker back about ten-fifteen yards or make kicking it out of the end zone more of a penalty - ball gets placed at the 40 yard line.

This is a joke, right? Matthew Stafford has played in that stadium for over a decade. You mean to tell me people are this stupid?

I wonder if there were any kick returns in week one?

It was Brady's first time and all but it was kinda sucky. Jason Witten or Booger McFarland sucky. He never actually said anything and mostly spouted the blandest of platitudes. Like he was being interviewed and didn't want to risk saying anything controversial. And it didn't help they kept running his annoying commercial. "Why not buy a soccer team?" "Got one."

There was at least one: GB, down 5 with 30 seconds left, decided, for some dumb ass reason, to try and return a kick 8 yards deep. Worked about like you'd expect.

I find this is a common problem with athletes-turned-broadcasters, they're still close to the action and still have personal relationships and it really limits them.

That and just generally not understanding what makes for good broadcasting. Insight is nice, but actually not that rare among recently retired players. Timing, the improvisational quality of talking to your broadcast partner, being able to expand or condense your remarks on the fly based on the time requirements of the game happening in front of you, that's rarer and more important most of the time, and none of that was there. Maybe it'll get better, I dunno.

Greg Olsen was a natural. The Brady incident may be the best thing that ever happens to his career earnings.

Brady needs to get that voice workout going. Smoke a few Reds, something. There’s a reason nobody sounds like him. Even Romo has good sounding voice.

That was a big part of it. He does have this kind of weenie sounding voice. The NFL worships at the altar of hype and bombast and shamelessly tries to mythologize anything football related. To them Brady must have seemed a golden child sent from on high. I don't know if anyone else watched that commercial I mentioned but I thought it was kind of embarrassing. It tried so hard to cast him as this 7 time Super Bowl winning/gunslinger type and then ... he talked.

Too early to cross off the Panthers and Giants as teams not winning the Super Bowl this year?

Just wait until we put the Red Rifle in! Bojangles needs to make the switch too!

that made no sense.
