Doom and Black Metal

Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine
Just wondering if anyone here listens to this type of music? These two genres are on the more extreme side of music, like black metal.Starting primarily in Norway, most of the lyrical emphasis revolves around satanic, pagan, and occult themes. Some lyrics celebrate the cold, darkness, forest, and natural surroundings in many Northern European countries, as well as folklore and history. They also sometimes explore themes or war, misanthropy, desolation, and even apocalypse. Some bands also get lyrical inspiration from many of Tolkien work, mainly from the The Lord of the Rings. The vocals are more raspy or high-pitched shreiks, different from death metal vocals. The guitars are fast and highly distorted with a relatively thin or thick guitar tone. The drums are usually double bass, blast beat, and d-beat drumming.Sometimes the drums take on a more slower role accompanied a dry and very empty tone, to create an atmosphereric effect of darkness, cold, and desolation. Some of the well known bands are: Mayhem, Darkthrone, Burzum (early works), Immortal, and Emperor.Doom metal on the other hand is much slower most of the time and is strongly influenced by early works of Black Sabbath. It emerged as a recognized genre of metal in the mid-1980s and brought on more slower and heavier tones, and evoked an atmosphere of darkness, dispair, and misery, for the most part.It is more simplistic than Black metal and the other genres of metal. The guitars are usually heavy, down-tuned, and loud which is an important feature to the genre. The vocals vary from each band, but some have no vocals and just instrumental. The drums for the most part are very simplistic and repetitive. The bass is usually thick and down-tuned with the guitar. Some of the well known bands in this genre are: Sunn O))) (pronounced Sun), Boris, Earth, Isis, Goatsnake, Electric Wizard (early material), High on Fire, Candlemass, Jesu, and Neurosis. So does anybody listen to either or both of these genres of music?

Coming from Sweden, a country with a strong metal tradition, I'm somewhat familiar with the different genres and concepts of metal. I've never been a big fan of black metal and doom metal but I've heard some of it. Black metal is interesting because it's actually quite artistic, in its pure form, even though it's not enjoyable to listen to. Some bands consider it to be about capturing the ugliness and the darkness of life and despise melodies and harmonies. Not exactly catchy tunes.....

But bands like Immortal, for instance, are pretty straighforward metal with gothic melodies and traditional riffs along with the high pitched shrieks and corpse paintings. They are often accused of being commercial by the old school bands.

There is this excellent documentary about the Norwegian black metal history, but I can't remember what it's called right now.....

Like Emperor, used Electric Wizard as the soundtrack for my A-Level short film, love Dopethrone. Seen High on Fire live supporting Mastodon, pretty good and have 2 or 3 albums.

Isn't Opeth early Black Metal? They have been around for a significant amount of time, and they have a pretty large catalog of albums.

Also, I have an album by As I Lay Dying, and I like it quite a bit. Not sure where they are from, or what style it is... Death Metal maybe...

I think Opeth is considered to be death metal if belonging to any metal genre. I read somewhere though that their old material contains somewhat satanic lyrics. So perhaps early Opeth is early black metal...

More up to speed on the sub-genres now, and I am not a big Black Metal fan. Most of it is too brooding and I definitely prefer Melodic Death as a metal genre, especially Dark Tranquillity, (early) In Flames, and Amorphis (more folk melo-death, but still awesome).

Dark Tranquillity is my favorite band working today, and I just can't get enough of their stuff lately. Also been spinning In Flames' Whoracle and Colony a ton lately, too.

Doom Metal

Black Metal

Don't listen to as much metal now compared to when I was younger but use to love Doom Metal, couldn't stand the sub genre of Black Metal though but during my Goth phase I use to hear the stuff a lot because of the people I use to hang around with, it's just not for me.
