The cinema of Japan

Can anyone recommend more films from Japan that need to be on my watchlist?

I'm aware of all filmographies from Kitano, Kurosawa, H Koreeda, Ozu, Mizoguchi, N Kawase, Takashi Miike, Ryűsuke Hamaguchi so these can be excluded as I've seen many. I'm not particularly a fan of anime or horror. And I've seen the following:

Woman in the Dunes
Onibaba
Kuroneko
Tetsuo
Pulse
Cure
Confessions
Tokyo Sonata
Hausu
Battle Royale
Kwaidan
The Ballad of Narayama
Vengeance is Mine
Fires on the Plain
Branded to Kill
A Colt is my Passport
Lady Snowblood
The Ghost of Yotsuya

I have these on my watchlist:

An Actor's revenge
Death by Hanging
Tokyo Drift
The Face of Another
Funeral Parade of Roses
Jigoku
Yearning

So I prefer crime thrillers or dramas. Not a massive fan of martial arts or samurai but wouldn't count them out.

Any others that are essential viewing?

Samurai Rebellion 1967 ‘上意討ち 拝領妻始末’ Masaki Kobayashi

Already on your to-watch list, but definitely check out "The Face of Another"

I would add some Ozu, Kurosawa, but I'm guessing you saw my favorites.

-Anatahan for me is a 10/10, but it's kinda experimental, and although its Japanese, its narrated by the director. AND, its on YouTube for free.
-Pitfall - 8/10

-The Yellow Handkerchief is a cool road trip movie. 8/10
-The Red Angel - 8/10
-Pale Flower -- 8/10, cool crime movie that isn't full of cliches
-Boy (1969) - 8/10
-The Human Condition
-Hara-kiri

Welcome to the human race...
edit: heh, too slow

Since you didn't mention Masaki Kobayashi, I'm just going to suggest delving further into his work. Even if you're not big on samurai films, Hara-kiri and Samurai Rebellion are at the peak not just of the genre but the former is something of a recent addition to the greatest films of all-time so it's absolutely essential viewing. Leaving those aside, there's also the matter of his Human Condition trilogy, which is a pretty strong contender for the greatest war film ever made (or three of them, anyway). Even his lesser work like Hymn to a Quiet Man or Inn of Evil is still pretty interesting.

Also, check out Wild Zero. ROCK AND ROLLLLLLL!!!

I've seen departures, liked it. I have Matsuko on Blu Ray but never seen it. Others added to list thanks

While it may be in English, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence should count at least as a partial Japanese film, as it is a mashup of Japan and US cinema. And it is one of the greatest movies ever made. Certainly Oshima's best.

Also every movie ever made be Seijun Suzuki, because life is less important without him.

There's a nice little old movie from 1937 about a village dealing with Samurai corruption called Humanity and Paper Balloons.

Kansen is a vaguely supernatural thriller/horror set in a hospital.

Everything else I know will probably be named by other folks.

Sorry if I'm rude but I'm right

I have decided (with my executor) that my epitaph will give you and only you credit for that movie.

"Here lies a guy who was recommended a good movie by Mr. Minio" - but feel free to change it up..
